Job description

Job Summary:
We seek a highly skilled and experienced Clinical Laboratory Scientist specializing in Blood Bank to provide expert laboratory testing and analysis in a high-volume, trauma Level I teaching hospital setting. The role requires performing blood bank procedures, including type/screen and crossmatch, independently during night shifts. The Clinical Lab Scientist will ensure accurate and timely results, collaborate with clinical teams, and maintain compliance with laboratory standards. A minimum of 2 years' recent experience in blood bank within a large hospital environment is mandatory.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform blood bank testing including type and screen, crossmatch, and related immunohematology procedures.
  • Operate and maintain blood bank instrumentation and software systems, ensuring quality control and accuracy of results.
  • Work independently during night shifts, managing high volume sample processing (30-50 samples per day).
  • Collaborate with clinical teams to provide timely and accurate laboratory data for patient care decisions.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory and hospital policies for laboratory procedures and documentation.
  • Assist with training and education in the laboratory as needed.
  • Participate in rotating weekend and holiday coverage to support unit needs.
Required Skills & Certifications:
  • Minimum 2 years recent and current experience in blood bank laboratory work within a large hospital (300+ beds).
  • ASCP Blood Bank (ASCP-BB) certification required.
  • Experience with blood bank software and instrumentation (e.g., Wellsky, Immucor) required.
  • Ability to work independently and confidently during night shifts.
  • Experience in a trauma Level I hospital environment preferred.
  • Ability to handle high volume testing efficiently and accurately.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:
  • Certification in Clinical Immunohematology Science (Clin Immunohem Sci) preferred.
  • Experience in teaching hospital settings.
Special Considerations:
  • Shift start time is generally 2130 but may flex to 2000 as needed.
  • Must be able to work fully independently at night without direct supervision.
  • Rotating weekend and holiday coverage required.
  • On-call is not required.
  • Requests for scheduling accommodations due to outside employment will not be considered.
  • Facility may call off once per two-week pay period.
Scheduling:
  • 4x10 hour shifts, variable days including nights.
  • Rotating weekends and holidays are part of the schedule.
  • Guaranteed hours with occasional call-offs allowed by facility policy.
