Job description

The hiring pay range for Production Supervisor is $70,304- $78,000 annually.

SUMMARY

The Production Supervisor oversees the Back of House operation of contracted events at the Civic and Balboa Theatres. They assist with maintaining the workplace culture and are a member of the Event Operations Team The Production Supervisor acts as a primary contact for events, managing communication and needs of artists, promoters and clients. Their focus is on using partnership and teamwork to deliver a safe and professional environment for our internal and external guests. The Production Supervisor works closely with the Union crew to maintain the performance and backstage areas in top condition to best serve clients and guests.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • First and foremost is a commitment to the culture and purpose of CREATE MOMENTS THAT MATTER for all employees, guests and clients.
  • Provide leadership regarding the BRAVO service strategy to all in the division, holding themselves and others accountable to these elements at all times.
  • Perform specified duties for the pre-event advance, event operation, and close out according to the direction of the Production Manager or Director of Production.
  • Work with clients and IATSE to ensure the most effective, efficient, safe, and economical provision of required personnel for a successful engagement.
  • Familiarize touring crews with SDT Safety protocols, location of electrical hook-ups, FOH positions, audio hookups, dressing room layout, as necessary.
  • Act as liaison with outside contractors or other service providers as needed for production requirements.
  • Ensure equipment, venues, and Back of House areas are maintained in a safe and clean condition.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely submission of production-related event expenses to clients for equipment, outside services, and SDT personnel for the event settlement.
  • Maintain a competent expertise level of SDT and Production division policies and procedures, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement between San Diego Theatres and IATSE Local 122.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the operation manual of the division's ongoing practices in the areas of administration, safety, and equipment.
  • Maintain an inventory of in-house theatrical equipment to assist with organization and budgeting.
  • Prepare input and recommendations for needed materials and equipment. Prepare purchasing information for materials and equipment, when requested.
  • Maintain and periodically update San Diego Theatres Technical Specifications and floorplans.
  • Assist in the hiring and training of Production personnel.
  • Perform workplace safety audits and ensure workplace safety training.
  • Collaborate with Production team members on division's digital organization, leveraging technology to increase effectiveness in communicating information.
  • Provide input and recommendations for needed materials and equipment. Supervise labor providing the repair, placement, and maintenance of theatrical equipment, materials and supplies as needed for the operation of the facility.
  • Partner and effectively work with all SDT staff as needed to coordinate projects and events to ensure maximum contributions to a high performing team.
  • Assist in carrying out policies, procedures and guidelines and promptly advise the Production Manager of conflicts or inappropriate actions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong leadership skills that prioritize quality decision-making, cross-departmental collaboration, and results.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to diplomatically and tactfully resolve difficult and sensitive situations.
  • Possess exceptional ethics, honesty, and integrity as well as complete respect for confidentiality and the appropriateness of communication.
  • Able to converse with the client. in a clear and concise manner with the utmost professionalism.
  • Strong knowledge of the elements of professional touring productions and the operation of theatrical facility and equipment.
  • Competent in the fiscal and staffing requirements of a Performing Arts Production department.
  • Ability and expectation to work irregular hours, nights, weekends, holidays, and long hours as necessary.
  • Expert ability to read, interpret and create documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Expert ability to write reports, correspondence, and other business-related documents.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Suite of tools. Office365, Microsoft Teams and SharePoint skills a plus.
  • Ability to use Auto CAD a plus.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to understand instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to solve multiple problems involving varying situations in a fast-paced environment.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in hospitality, Technical Theater, event management, sports management, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Graduate level degree and professional certifications a plus.
  • Have a working knowledge of theatrical equipment and terminology.
  • Three (3) years' experience managing live events.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to communicate concisely in the English language. Bilingual (all languages) a plus.
  • Ability to speak effectively in front of groups.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides oversight of members of the IATSE Local 122 stagehands. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws, and the terms set by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Responsibilities include addressing safety concerns, complaints and resolving problems.

  • Trained Crowd Manager a plus
