What is a background layout artist?

Background layout artists are visual storytellers in animation and film production who design and create the environments where the action takes place. They interpret storyboards to establish the perspective, composition, and mood of each scene, ensuring that characters and objects are integrated seamlessly. Their work provides the foundation for animators and background painters, helping set the tone and support the narrative visually. This role requires strong artistic skills, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of spatial relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a background layout artist?

To thrive as a Background Layout Artist, you need strong drawing skills, a solid understanding of perspective, composition, and spatial design, often supported by a degree or coursework in art or animation. Familiarity with digital illustration tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Toon Boom Harmony, or similar industry-standard software is typically required. Attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to collaborate effectively with other artists and production teams are crucial soft skills. These abilities ensure visually compelling and cohesive backgrounds that enhance storytelling and meet production deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced by background layout artists and how can they be addressed?

Background Layout Artists often face the challenge of balancing creative vision with production constraints such as time, budget, and consistency with the overall style of the animation. They must ensure that backgrounds effectively support the storytelling without overpowering the main action. Collaboration with directors and other artists is key; clear communication helps align expectations and resolve any discrepancies early in the process. Staying organized and receptive to feedback also helps Background Layout Artists navigate revisions and meet tight deadlines successfully.

Description

Part-time, Nonexempt, 21 hours/week, $59.52/hour

Backgroundย

Internationally ย recognized as a premier museum and research center, The Frick ย Collection is known for its distinguished Old Master paintings and ย outstanding examples of European sculpture and decorative arts. The ย collection originated with Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919), who bequeathed ย his home, paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts to the public for ย their enjoyment. The museum's holdings-which encompass masterworks from ย the Renaissance through the nineteenth century-have grown over the ย decades, more than doubling in size since the opening of the museum in ย 1935. A critical component of the institution is the Frick Art Research ย Library, founded in 1920 by Helen Clay Frick, daughter of the museum's ย founder. One of the world's top art history research centers, it has ย served students, scholars, and members of the public free of charge for ย generations.ย

Between 2020 and early 2024, the Frick ย underwent a comprehensive renovation, during which time it was open in a ย temporary home, Frick Madison. The museum and library reopened to the ย public in April 2025. In addition to special exhibition galleries and ย education spaces, enhanced visitor amenities and accessible spaces have ย been added.ย

Workplace Cultureย

At the ย Frick, we pride ourselves on promoting an open and welcoming workplace ย culture that supports a work-life balance. The Frick strives to provide ย its employees with competitive salaries and exceptional benefits in a ย beautiful and pleasant work setting, while offering an excellent ย opportunity to appreciate some of the world's finest works of art.ย

The ย Frick Collection provides equal opportunity to all employees and ย applicants for employment without regard to personal characteristics ย such as race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, ย pregnancy, genetic information, military or veteran status, sexual ย orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, marital and civil ย partnership/union status, alienage or citizenship status, creed, genetic ย predisposition or carrier status, unemployment status, familial status, ย domestic violence, sexual violence or stalking victim status, caregiver ย status, or other characteristics protected by law. This policy applies ย to all terms and conditions of employment, including, but not limited ย to, hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, ย leaves of absence, compensation, and training.ย

Qualified candidates of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply for vacant positions at all levels.ย

Position Summaryย

The ย Frick Collection seeks a part-time Conservator of Paintings to join the ย Conservation Department. This is an inaugural position in the newly ย renovated museum. Experience in the ย installation of contemporary paintings for temporary exhibitions is ย helpful. The applicant must demonstrate a firm grasp of theoretical ย principles in traditional painting techniques and historical restoration ย practices.ย

The Conservator of Paintings will work under ย the supervision of the Chief Conservator in carrying out treatments, ย conducting technical studies, assisting with exhibition preparation and ย installation, preparing loan evaluations, making acquisition ย assessments, and conducting materials research. The candidate should be ย well versed in appropriate conservation documentation and preventative ย measures and adept at advising on framing, packing, and storage. As an ย important member of the team, the Conservator of Paintings will ย participate in engagement activities that raise the profile of the ย department for patrons and the general public and will carry out ย research for presentation and publication.
