Position Summary:
The Facilities Plumber is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing plumbing systems, fixtures, piping, drains, water heaters, backflow prevention devices, and related equipment across the organization’s facilities. This role supports safe, sanitary, reliable, and efficient facility operations for staff, clients, volunteers, visitors, and community partners. The ideal candidate is safety-minded, service-oriented, and able to perform skilled plumbing work while supporting the mission-driven culture of a nonprofit organization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Install, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair plumbing systems, fixtures, pipes, valves, fittings, faucets, sinks, toilets, drains, water heaters, drinking fountains, pumps, and related equipment.
• Perform preventive maintenance on plumbing systems to reduce leaks, backups, service interruptions, water waste, and emergency repairs.
• Diagnose plumbing issues, identify root causes, and complete repairs using appropriate tools, equipment, and approved methods.
• Clear clogged drains, sinks, toilets, sewer lines, and related systems using plungers, augers, snakes, jetting equipment, or other approved tools.
• Repair or replace damaged pipes, fixtures, valves, seals, traps, fittings, and other plumbing components.
• Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, technical manuals, work orders, and equipment specifications.
• Support facility renovation, remodeling, and construction projects by coordinating plumbing work with internal staff, contractors, inspectors, and vendors.
• Respond to all duties and tasks in a timely and professional manner.
• Take/Acknowledge all phone calls, emails, and text messages and respond to communications in a timely manner.
• Ability to adjust the workday hours accordingly for possible higher priority redirection of services/tasks as necessary.
• Assist with backflow prevention, water quality, irrigation, and life-safety-related plumbing components as assigned.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, inspections completed, and repairs needed.
• Monitor plumbing supply inventory and communicate material needs to the appropriate supervisor.
• Follow all safety procedures, sanitation practices, lockout/tagout requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local plumbing codes.
• Provide courteous service and clear communication to staff, program teams, clients, volunteers, visitors, and community partners.
• Perform other facilities and maintenance duties as assigned to support organizational operations.
• Support all other Facilities Staff and Facilities Technician tasks, projects, and workload.
• Perform daily duties and tasks in a courteous, timely, and professional manner.
• Maintain a standard of ethics, conduct, and personal appearance.
Required Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a plumbing apprenticeship, vocational training, or related technical program preferred.
• Minimum of three years of experience performing plumbing installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair in a commercial, institutional, nonprofit, education, healthcare, housing, or similar facility setting.
• Current plumber license, journeyman certification, or ability to obtain required licensure as applicable by state or local regulation.
• Working knowledge of applicable plumbing codes, safety standards, sanitation requirements, and local building regulations.
• Ability to safely use plumbing tools and equipment, including hand tools, power tools, pipe cutters, threading equipment, drain cleaning equipment, ladders, and lifts.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, follow written and verbal instructions, and respond appropriately to urgent facility needs.
• Strong communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and customer service skills.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record may be required depending on facility locations and organizational needs.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience working in mission-driven, nonprofit, community service, healthcare, behavioral health, education, housing, or social service environments.
• Experience with backflow prevention testing, water heaters, pumps, irrigation systems, commercial restroom fixtures, sewer systems, or drain inspection equipment.
• Basic knowledge of general facility maintenance, including electrical, HVAC, carpentry, mechanical systems, and building repairs.
• Bilingual ability or experience serving diverse communities is a plus, depending on organizational needs.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
• Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, pull, push, and work from ladders or lifts as needed.
• Ability to lift and carry tools, equipment, and materials up to [insert weight requirement] pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Work may occur indoors and outdoors, including restrooms, kitchens, utility rooms, mechanical rooms, ceilings, crawl spaces, confined spaces, rooftops, trenches, and areas with exposure to water, sewage, noise, dust, weather, chemicals, or other facility-related hazards.
• May be required to respond to after-hours emergencies, on-call needs, or occasional weekend/evening work.
