What is a backend software engineer?

Backend software engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain the server-side logic, databases, and application programming interfaces (APIs) that power web and mobile applications. They focus on ensuring that data is stored, retrieved, and processed efficiently, and that the application's functionality works seamlessly behind the scenes. Backend engineers often work with programming languages like Java, Python, or Node.js, and use frameworks and tools to build scalable and secure systems. Their work is crucial to supporting the user-facing parts of applications developed by frontend engineers.

How do backend software engineers typically collaborate with frontend teams to deliver seamless user experiences?

Backend software engineers frequently work closely with frontend developers to ensure that APIs, data structures, and server responses align with the needs of user interfaces. Regular communication, code reviews, and participation in sprint planning sessions help both teams coordinate on new features and resolve integration issues. It's common to use collaborative tools like Swagger or Postman for API documentation and testing, which streamlines cross-team workflows. This close partnership is essential to delivering reliable, performant, and user-friendly applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backend Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as in Java, Python, or Node.js), knowledge of data structures and algorithms, and often a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with databases (SQL and NoSQL), RESTful APIs, version control systems like Git, and cloud platforms is typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for succeeding in this role. These competencies enable the design, development, and maintenance of robust, scalable backend systems that power reliable applications.

What is the difference between Backend Software vs Frontend Developer?

AspectBackend SoftwareFrontend Developer
Primary FocusServer-side logic, databases, APIsUser interface, user experience, visual elements
Required SkillsProgramming languages like Java, Python, Ruby; database management; server architectureHTML, CSS, JavaScript; UI/UX design; responsive design
Work EnvironmentServer environments, cloud platforms, backend frameworksWeb browsers, design tools, client-side frameworks
Common UsageBuilding and maintaining server-side applicationsCreating interactive and visually appealing websites

While both roles are essential in web development, Backend Software focuses on server-side logic and data management, whereas Frontend Developer concentrates on the visual and interactive aspects of websites. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and responsibilities in the industry.

Is a backend software developer a good career?

A backend software developer is a viable and in-demand career, as it involves building and maintaining server-side applications using programming languages like Java, Python, or Node.js. The role often requires knowledge of databases, APIs, and cloud services, and offers opportunities for growth in various industries. Job stability and salary potential are generally favorable for skilled developers in this field.

Job description

Senior Backend Software Engineer Overview / Summary

We are seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer to design, build, and operate high-throughput backend systems that ingest, process, and serve large volumes of telematics data from connected vehicle fleets.

This role works at the intersection of distributed systems, data engineering, and API development, delivering reliable, low-latency services that support fleet intelligence products for commercial and enterprise customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop scalable, high-performance backend services and APIs that process and expose telematics data, including GPS, trip events, driver behavior, vehicle diagnostics, and sensor telemetry at fleet scale.
  • Build and maintain real-time and batch data pipelines that ingest high-volume vehicle event streams from messaging systems such as Pub/Sub and Kafka into data warehouses and operational data stores.
  • Design, deploy, and manage workloads on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, IAM, VPC networking, and Cloud Composer.
  • Configure security and access controls and troubleshoot production performance and cost issues within GCP environments.
  • Design and optimize data pipelines and storage architectures for large-scale, high-volume and high-velocity datasets.
  • Work with distributed computing, partitioning, and data lake/data warehouse patterns using technologies such as Spark, Hadoop, Kafka, or Dataflow.
  • Build, train, and deploy machine learning models or rule-based expert systems to support decision automation.
  • Design, build, secure, and document RESTful or GraphQL APIs, including authentication/authorization, versioning, rate limiting, and integrations with internal and third-party systems.
  • Write optimized SQL queries in BigQuery and manage datasets, partitioning, and clustering for performance and cost control.
  • Integrate BigQuery with BI tools or downstream applications for reporting and analytics.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 7+ years of IT experience and 5+ years of software development experience.
  • Advanced practical experience in at least one programming language or practical experience in two coding languages.
  • 3+ years of expert-level GCP experience, including designing, deploying, and managing cloud workloads.
  • 3+ years of expert-level Big Data experience involving large-scale, high-volume/high-velocity datasets.
  • 3+ years of expert-level API development experience, including RESTful or GraphQL APIs.
  • 2+ years of expert-level BigQuery experience, including SQL optimization, dataset management, partitioning, and clustering.
  • 1+ year of experience building, training, and deploying machine learning models or rule-based expert systems.
  • Experience with Kotlin, Java, Python, or an equivalent JVM/backend language.
  • Experience with backend frameworks and technologies such as Spring Boot, gRPC, and REST API design.
  • Experience with data technologies such as BigQuery, PostgreSQL, Redis, Bigtable, Kafka, or Pub/Sub.
  • Experience with GCP or an equivalent cloud platform, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Broader Google Cloud Platform ecosystem knowledge, including technologies such as Pub/Sub, Cloud Functions, GKE/Kubernetes, Cloud Build/CI/CD pipelines, or cost-optimization/FinOps practices.
  • Experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Vertex AI.
  • Experience with TDD, MLOps-adjacent data pipeline patterns, database performance tuning, and API versioning.
  • Certification program experience.
