The main difference between a Backend Software Engineer Intern and a Backend Software Engineer lies in experience, responsibilities, and employment status. Interns are typically students gaining practical experience, while Backend Software Engineers are full-time professionals responsible for core backend development tasks.

What does a Backend Software Engineer Intern do?

A Backend Software Engineer Intern assists in developing and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web and mobile applications. They work closely with senior engineers to write efficient code, troubleshoot issues, and ensure smooth data flow between users and servers. Interns may also participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation to support the overall software development process. This role provides hands-on experience with backend frameworks, database management, and industry best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Backend Software Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backend Software Engineer Intern, you typically need a solid understanding of programming languages like Java, Python, or Node.js, along with knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and database fundamentals. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), RESTful APIs, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns stand out in team settings. These competencies are crucial for building reliable backend services, collaborating efficiently, and contributing meaningful code in a fast-paced development environment.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as a Backend Software Engineer Intern?

As a Backend Software Engineer Intern, you'll typically work on tasks such as designing and implementing APIs, optimizing database queries, and supporting the integration of backend services. Interns often collaborate closely with senior engineers, participate in code reviews, and contribute to team meetings and sprint planning. While you'll be given guidance and mentorship, you'll also be encouraged to take ownership of smaller features or bug fixes within larger projects, providing valuable hands-on experience with scalable systems. This role offers insight into how backend systems are architected and maintained in a real-world environment.

Job Application Deadline: 05/31/2026

Candidate profile

As a Staff Backend Software Engineer, you will be a key technical leader, responsible for the design, development, and delivery of our core backend services. You will tackle complex technical challenges, set architectural direction, and champion best practices across the engineering organization. This is a highly visible role for an expert who wants to have a major impact on our platform.

What You'll Do

  • Technical Leadership: Lead the design and implementation of large-scale, high-performance backend systems and microservices using Node.js.
  • Best Practices: Drive the adoption of modern software development practices, including automated testing, conduct code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Cloud Architecture: Architect, maintain and monitor robust, scalable and reliable services on AWS, leveraging services like EKS, MSK (Kafka), and S3.
  • Mentorship: Mentor other backend engineers and provide technical guidance to elevate the skill level of the entire team.
  • Incident Management: Lead the response and resolution for complex production incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement preventative measures.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, DevOps, and front-end engineers, to deliver timely, high-quality and performing end-to-end solutions.

The Skills and Experience You'll Bring

  • 10+ years of experience in backend software development, including significant time as a senior or staff engineer owning complex, highthroughput production services.
  • Deep Node.js/TypeScript expertise, building and operating Express (or similar) HTTP APIs at scale.
  • Proven experience owning Tier1, customerfacing transaction systems (e.g., posting, booking, marketplace flows) with strict availability, correctness, and latency expectations.
  • Extensive AWS experience with production backends, ideally including EKS/Kubernetes, Lambda, MSK/Kafka, DocumentDB or MongoDB, and Secrets Manager/S3/CloudWatch, plus infrastructureascode (Terraform or similar).
  • Strong background in eventdriven and distributed systems using Kafka/MSK
  • Expertise with document databases especially DocumentDB/MongoDB
  • Handson experience with zero/lowdowntime migrations
  • Strong understanding of microservice and API contracts
  • Fluency with observability and oncall health, designing dashboards, APM traces, logs, and alerts; defining SLOs; and using these tools to drive down incident frequency and MTTR.
  • Experience establishing and raising engineering standards for a team: PR and testing guidelines (unit/contract/integration/smoke/end-to-end), deployment validation checklists, and postincident review practices.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership: leading crossteam designs in ambiguous problem spaces, writing clear system design documents, operations runbooks, and driving alignment across Engineering, Product, and Operations.
  • Proven mentoring track record, especially helping midlevel engineers grow in system design, observability, and operational excellence.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain tradeoffs and system behavior clearly to engineers, product managers, and nontechnical stakeholders.
