What does a backend software developer intern do?

A Backend Software Developer Intern assists in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web applications. Their responsibilities typically include writing code, debugging issues, and collaborating with other developers to ensure data flows efficiently between the server and users. Interns often work with languages like Python, Java, or Node.js and gain practical experience with databases, cloud services, and development tools. This role provides valuable exposure to real-world software engineering practices and helps interns develop the technical and teamwork skills needed for a career in backend development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend software developer intern?

To thrive as a Backend Software Developer Intern, you should have a solid understanding of programming languages like Java, Python, or Node.js, and basic knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and databases. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), RESTful APIs, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is often expected. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication set standout interns apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for building reliable backend systems, collaborating across teams, and adapting to real-world engineering challenges.

What types of projects and technologies do backend software developer interns typically work on during their internship?

Backend Software Developer Interns are often assigned to work on real-world projects such as building APIs, optimizing databases, or improving existing backend services. Interns typically use languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, and work with frameworks and tools such as Django, Spring Boot, or Express.js. Collaboration with frontend developers, QA engineers, and product managers is common, providing valuable experience in agile environments. The projects and technologies may vary depending on the company, but they are designed to help interns gain hands-on experience and contribute meaningfully to the team's goals.

Job description

About Us

Air-tek is a Canadian-based software company with a powerful suite of unique products that have already achieved a significant share of a huge global market. Our product-market fit is strong, and customers are lining up to buy. Although our global customers know us, we intentionally operate in stealth mode during this growth phase.

Our diverse team shares a passion for solving complex problems with a drive to innovate and a vision to reshape the passenger-centric travel industry. Based in Toronto, our inclusive culture is built on trust, collaboration, delivering a great product, and continuous personal growth. We love what we do, and we support the team around us.

The Role

We're looking for Software Developers who are excited to build high-quality, production-grade software and grow their technical ownership over time.

As a Software Developer, you'll work on core product features and services that power real-world airline operations. You'll contribute to system design, build scalable APIs and integrations, and collaborate closely with senior engineers, QA, and product partners to deliver reliable solutions.

This role is ideal for engineers who are past the "just following tickets" phase and ready to own meaningful components, make technical decisions with guidance, and continuously level up their craft.
What You'll Do
  • Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs that support mission-critical airline workflows.
  • Implement features end-to-end, from design and development to testing, deployment, and support.
  • Collaborate with senior developers on system design, architecture decisions, and best practices.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code with a strong focus on quality and reliability.
  • Debug production issues, analyze root causes, and contribute to long-term fixes and improvements.
  • Participate in code reviews, both receiving and providing thoughtful feedback.
  • Work closely with product and QA to deliver features that meet real customer needs.
  • Continuously learn new technologies and take on increasing technical responsibility over time.
About You
  • 3-6 years of professional software development experience in a production environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong experience with C# / .NET Core or similar backend technologies.
  • Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs and working with service-based or microservice architectures.
  • Working knowledge of JavaScript / TypeScript and exposure to modern front-end frameworks (React, Vue.js, or similar).
  • Experience with databases such as MySQL, MongoDB, or similar data stores.
  • Familiarity with message queues or event-driven systems (e.g., RabbitMQ).
  • Comfortable working in ambiguous problem spaces with guidance and support.
  • Strong communicator who collaborates well within cross-functional teams.
  • Takes pride in delivering quality work and improving systems over time.
Bonus Points For
  • Hands-on experience with our stack: React, Vue.js, TypeScript, Node.js, .NET Core, MongoDB, Docker, AWS
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, GitHub Actions, or Team Foundation Server (TFS)
  • Experience with performance optimization or distributed architecture design.
  • Contributions to automation, developer tooling, or internal platform improvements.
Why Join Air-tek
  • Work on meaningful problems that power the backbone of the airline industry.
  • Build production-grade software that scales globally and impacts millions of passengers.
  • Collaborate with brilliant engineers in a high-trust, low-ego environment.
  • Operate with autonomy and ownership - your ideas will shape our products.
  • Exposure to modern technologies, cloud environments, and complex system design.
  • Competitive compensation and growth opportunities in a fast-scaling company.
  • Please note that this role requires three days a week in our Toronto office which is located near Union Station
If you love solving hard problems, thrive in ambiguity, and take pride in building software that matters - we want to hear from you.

The salary range for this role is $90,000 to $140,000 annually. In addition to salary, new hires may be eligible to receive stock options. The salary range shared is intended as a guide; the final salary offered may vary based on factors including the experience and skillset of the candidate. Our company is committed to providing a fair, equitable, and competitive salary that reflects the value an individual brings to the organization.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
