Backend Software Developer Intern information

What does a backend software developer intern do?

A Backend Software Developer Intern assists in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web applications. Their responsibilities typically include writing code, debugging issues, and collaborating with other developers to ensure data flows efficiently between the server and users. Interns often work with languages like Python, Java, or Node.js and gain practical experience with databases, cloud services, and development tools. This role provides valuable exposure to real-world software engineering practices and helps interns develop the technical and teamwork skills needed for a career in backend development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend software developer intern?

To thrive as a Backend Software Developer Intern, you should have a solid understanding of programming languages like Java, Python, or Node.js, and basic knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and databases. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), RESTful APIs, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is often expected. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication set standout interns apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for building reliable backend systems, collaborating across teams, and adapting to real-world engineering challenges.

What types of projects and technologies do backend software developer interns typically work on during their internship?

Backend Software Developer Interns are often assigned to work on real-world projects such as building APIs, optimizing databases, or improving existing backend services. Interns typically use languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, and work with frameworks and tools such as Django, Spring Boot, or Express.js. Collaboration with frontend developers, QA engineers, and product managers is common, providing valuable experience in agile environments. The projects and technologies may vary depending on the company, but they are designed to help interns gain hands-on experience and contribute meaningfully to the team's goals.

Job description

About Us

At Pickle Robot, we're on a mission to automate global supply chains with Physical AI. Our robots work alongside warehouse teams to unload trucks and containers - one of the toughest, most understaffed jobs in logistics - making the work safer, faster, and more efficient for the people doing it.  Loading trucks comes next, followed by the Dill Autonomy Engine: generalized autonomy that will eventually orchestrate robots across entire logistics processes.

We're looking for a Backend Software Engineer to join our Human-Robot Interaction team and build the systems behind task planning and robotic workflows.

This role sits at the intersection of software engineering and robotics infrastructure. You'll work closely with robotics engineers to design and build backend services that power real robotic systems on the warehouse floor - bringing strong engineering practices, clean code, thoughtful system design, and real attention to performance into an environment where you're not afraid to get close to the hardware.

What You'll Do
  • Design and build backend services supporting task planning and autonomy
  • Develop scalable, reliable, and performant systems using Python (and C++ where needed)
  • Contribute to system architecture and service design within the team
  • Build and maintain event-driven systems and messaging-based architectures
  • Collaborate closely with robotics engineers to integrate backend systems with real-world workflows
  • Continuously improve system maintainability and operational excellence across services
  • Participate in code reviews and technical discussions to elevate engineering standards
What You'll Bring
  • 2-5+ years of experience in backend or distributed systems engineering
  • Strong programming experience in Python, with experience in C++ or another strongly typed language (e.g., Rust, Go, Java)
  • Experience building or supporting web applications using Flask or REST APIs
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, concurrency, and distributed system design
  • Experience building or supporting event-driven systems, messaging frameworks (e.g., Kafka, ROS), or service-oriented architectures
  • Experience developing systems that interface with hardware, robotics, or real-world operational environments is a plus

Nice to have:

  • Experience with Human-Robot Interaction
$120,000 - $177,000 a year
Pay at Pickle
At Pickle Robot Company, we believe transparency builds trust. The salary range listed here is provided in accordance with Massachusetts law and reflects what we reasonably and in good faith expect to offer for this role. We often consider candidates at different levels of seniority, and final compensation will reflect the level at which a candidate is hired, along with factors like experience and location.
  Pickle Perks
Pickle provides best-in-class benefits, including health, dental, and vision insurance; unlimited vacation; paid federal and state holidays; 401(k) contributions of 5% of your salary; company-covered travel expenses; and other perks to make your working life more fun, comfortable, and productive.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
