What is a backend full stack engineer?

A Backend Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who specializes in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs of an application, while also having proficiency in front-end technologies. They are capable of working on both the backend and frontend parts of web applications, allowing them to develop end-to-end features and ensure seamless integration between the client and server sides. This role requires strong knowledge of programming languages such as JavaScript (Node.js), Python, or Java, as well as familiarity with databases, server architectures, and various web frameworks. Backend Full Stack Engineers often collaborate with designers, frontend developers, and other stakeholders to deliver complete and functional products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend full stack engineer?

To thrive as a Backend Full Stack Engineer, you need strong proficiency in server-side languages (such as Node.js, Python, or Java), database management, and a solid understanding of front-end technologies, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like Express, Django, or Spring), version control systems (like Git), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required. Effective problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you collaborate across disciplines and deliver robust solutions. These skills ensure scalable, maintainable applications and seamless integration between backend and frontend systems, which are critical for organizational success.

Job description

At Vironix, we are out to make the world a healthier place and move the needle in the delivery of healthcare which is one of the most pressing problems facing society today. Vironix Health leverages state of the art AI to deliver real-time remote monitoring, and detection of health deterioration due to viral and chronic illness. Our team, composed of esteemed scientists and technologists, is dedicated to pioneering work that stands at the forefront of healthcare and AI. We have a very small team of superstars, and are on a rapid trajectory of hypergrowth and have a few select openings for only the very best talent.

We're hiring a Full-Stack Engineer who will own the web and mobile frontend - the React and React Native surfaces that clinicians and patients use every day. You're not a specialist: you write backend APIs, navigate a Python codebase independently, and ship end to end without handing off to someone else. You'll work directly with our CTO and collaborate closely with the engineering team.

Our core team is based in Austin, TX. We work a hybrid schedule with a few days of in-person collaboration each month. We're looking for candidates already based in Austin or willing to relocate.

Requirements

  • Strong React and React Native experience - you've shipped production mobile apps, not just web
  • Comfortable reading, writing, and debugging Python backend code; you're not blocked by an API task
  • Experience with web frameworks
  • Working knowledge of PostgreSQL and relational data modeling
  • Self-directed and async-capable; you move fast without waiting for specs to be handed to you
  • Familiarity with cloud-hosted infrastructure (GCP preferred, AWS or Azure fine)
  • Genuine interest in healthcare - you want to build things that matter to real patients and clinicians
  • Based in Austin, TX or willing to relocate
  • Prior startup experience is helpful - you've operated with high ownership, limited process, and real accountability

Benefits

  • Competitive salary, depending on experience
  • Equity participation in a high-growth healthtech startup
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Hybrid work model - flexibility with intentional in-person collaboration
  • Direct impact on a product used in real clinical care
  • Small team, high ownership - your decisions ship to production
  • A culture that values efficiency and results over hours logged
