What is a backend engineer?

Backend Engineers are software developers who focus on building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web and mobile applications. They ensure that the data requested by the frontend systems is delivered efficiently and securely. Their work involves writing code in languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, integrating with databases, and optimizing the overall performance of applications. Backend Engineers also play a crucial role in ensuring data integrity and implementing security best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backend Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or Node.js, a solid understanding of algorithms, and experience with databases, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools such as RESTful APIs, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), version control systems (like Git), and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) is common. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are essential for building robust, scalable systems and collaborating efficiently within development teams.

What are some common challenges backend engineers face when integrating new technologies into existing systems?

Backend Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, maintaining data consistency, and minimizing service disruptions during deployment. They must carefully plan migrations, coordinate with frontend and DevOps teams, and implement thorough testing to avoid introducing bugs or security vulnerabilities. Effective communication and documentation are key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring a smooth transition.

What is the difference between Backend Engineer vs Software Developer?

The roles often overlap, but Backend Engineers focus more on the infrastructure that powers applications.

Are backend engineers still in demand?

Backend engineers are currently in high demand due to the ongoing need for server-side development, cloud computing, and scalable systems. Skills in programming languages like Java, Python, and frameworks such as Node.js are highly valued, and experience with database management and API development enhances job prospects.

What's a typical backend engineer salary?

A backend engineer's salary varies based on experience, location, and company size, but typically ranges from $70,000 to $130,000 annually in many regions. Job description

We created Frec to expand the possibilities for everyone and their money. We're a tight team of builders, creators, and designers who want to be smarter with our money for our futures and our families. As a software engineer at Frec, you'll create products that enable us to level the financial playing field and empower people to manage their own money. Some values we identify with are accountability, humility, compassion, and teamwork. If this resonates with you, join us at this pivotal time to help shape our structures, systems, and Frec's future.
Frec highly values product ideas and feedback from all employees, in a true bottoms-up fashion. This means as an engineer, you will work with a growing team comprised of product managers, designers, and brokerage operations professionals to ideate, prioritize, prototype, develop, test, and iterate on software that will educate and equip people with newer and smarter ways to build wealth. We're looking for engineers who have an unrelenting sense of urgency and capability to move fast, have a strong sense of ownership, ability to deal with ambiguity and are enthusiastic about tackling new challenges to help us build a world-class financial platform.
What you will do:
  • Backend Engineering: You will be working with a small team of experienced engineers across all areas related to the backend powering Frec. You will own large pieces of the infrastructure - all aspects of it ranging from proposing changes to existing services, building new ones, improving how we deploy, and ensuring the systems we build are stable, durable, and can scale smoothly as we grow. You take pride in designing services that not only work well in development but remain healthy, observable, and easy to operate in production.
  • Distributed Systems & Data Processing: You'll tackle complex backend challenges around data consistency, transactional integrity, and high availability. This includes designing APIs and services that are fault-tolerant, building mechanisms for secure and reliable financial data handling, and ensuring the platform scales gracefully under increasing load.
  • Infrastructure & Operations Mindset: You will help shape how we build, deploy, and monitor our services. You care deeply about stability and maintainability, ensuring every line of code contributes to a platform that's resilient in the face of failures and straightforward to operate.
  • Collaboration: You'll partner closely with other backend engineers, as well as product, design, and operations teams, to ensure we build a platform that is technically strong, operationally sound, and enables high-quality product experiences.

What we offer:
  • Competitive salary and equity grants
  • Fully paid health, vision and dental insurances
  • 401k
  • Monthly allowance to help with maintaining a healthy body and mind (fitness & mental health components)
  • Flexible (Unlimited) paid time off
  • Visa sponsorship & immigration support
  • Daily in-office lunch and dinner
  • Office in San Francisco/New York for in-person collaboration (close to public transit options)

Tech stack:
  • TypeScript/Node, Python as the main components of the backend
  • PostgreSQL as our data store, with Redis for caching and distributed coordination
  • Distributed worker systems powering asynchronous and high-throughput tasks
  • Deployed on AWS using containerized infrastructure
  • GraphQL as the mode of building and exposing APIs
