What is a backend engineer intern?

Backend Engineer Interns are students or entry-level professionals who assist in designing, developing, and maintaining the server-side components of web applications. They work with databases, APIs, and server logic to ensure smooth data flow and application performance. During their internship, they often collaborate with senior engineers to learn industry best practices, debug code, and help implement new features. This role provides valuable hands-on experience in backend technologies and prepares interns for a career in software engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend engineer intern?

To thrive as a Backend Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, along with foundational knowledge of algorithms, databases, and APIs. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), cloud platforms, and frameworks like Django or Express is commonly expected. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills set top candidates apart in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for building reliable backend systems, integrating with other software, and ensuring efficient team collaboration.

What types of projects and tasks can a backend engineer intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Backend Engineer Intern, you will typically work on tasks such as building and maintaining APIs, optimizing database queries, writing unit tests, and assisting with the integration of new backend features. Interns often collaborate closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams, learning best practices for scalable and maintainable code. You may also participate in code reviews and contribute to ongoing projects, giving you exposure to real-world production environments and the software development lifecycle.

Job description

Hadrian - Manufacturing the Future

Hadrian is building autonomous factories to reindustrialize America. By combining AI, advanced software, robotics, and full-stack manufacturing, we help aerospace and defense companies build rockets, satellites, aircraft, ships, and other mission-critical systems up to 10x faster and at significantly lower cost.

Following our $1.37B Series D at a $7.87B valuation, Hadrian is rapidly expanding our manufacturing footprint, launching new capabilities across welding, casting, forging, electronics, additive manufacturing, and more, while scaling our Factory-as-a-Service platform to transform how critical products are built.

Backed by leading investors including JPMorgan Chase, Valor Equity Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, Founders Fund, 137 Ventures, Lux Capital, T. Rowe Price, and Morgan Stanley, we’re building the future of American manufacturing—and looking for exceptional people to help make it happen.

If you’re ready to take on the most challenging and rewarding work of your career while helping create American manufacturing jobs for generations to come, you’re exactly who we’re looking for.

The Role:

Hadrian is looking for a Software Engineer Intern to join the team building the software backbone of our autonomous factory. You'll work alongside experienced engineers on real production systems from internal tooling and data pipelines to the software that powers factory operations and customer-facing workflows. This is a hands-on role where your code will ship, and your contributions will directly impact how Hadrian scales.

What You’ll Do

  • Build and improve internal tools, dashboards, and automation systems that support factory operations

  • Contribute to backend services, APIs, and data pipelines used across engineering, operations, and quality teams

  • Help design and implement features that improve visibility into production workflows, capacity, and program status

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including operations, program management, and quality to understand requirements and deliver software solutions

  • Write clean, well-tested code and participate in code reviews

  • Surface technical risks and contribute to architectural discussions

What We’re Looking For

  • Current university student pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and June 2028

  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages (Python, TypeScript, Go, or similar)

  • Familiarity with backend development, APIs, or data engineering

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work through ambiguous technical challenges

  • Clear written and verbal communication

  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through

  • Excitement for manufacturing, aerospace, defense, or industrial systems

  • Comfortable working in a fast-moving, highly ambiguous environment

  • Willingness to work on-site in Los Angeles, CA

  • Internships are available for our Fall 2026, Spring 2027, and Summer 2027 cohorts. Indicate your preferred term(s) when applying

What Will Set You Apart

  • Prior internship or project experience shipping production software

  • Interest in manufacturing systems, automation, or industrial software

What you’ll Gain

  • Hands-on experience building software for a high-growth, mission-driven industrial company

  • Direct involvement in real production systems, not just internal tools or side projects

  • A front-row seat to how Hadrian is transforming aerospace and defense manufacturing through software, automation, and data

Compensation

For this role, the target hourly range is $46.15 - $50.71

This reflects the lowest to highest hourly rate we reasonably and in good faith believe we would pay for this intern position at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range is subject to change. An intern's hourly rate within this range will be based on several factors, including, but not limited to relevant education, prior experience, skills, geographic location, and the nature of the internship assignment.
