Backend Engineer Intern information

What are Backend Engineer Interns?

Backend Engineer Interns are students or entry-level professionals who assist in designing, developing, and maintaining the server-side components of web applications. They work with databases, APIs, and server logic to ensure smooth data flow and application performance. During their internship, they often collaborate with senior engineers to learn industry best practices, debug code, and help implement new features. This role provides valuable hands-on experience in backend technologies and prepares interns for a career in software engineering.

What types of projects and tasks can a Backend Engineer Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Backend Engineer Intern, you will typically work on tasks such as building and maintaining APIs, optimizing database queries, writing unit tests, and assisting with the integration of new backend features. Interns often collaborate closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams, learning best practices for scalable and maintainable code. You may also participate in code reviews and contribute to ongoing projects, giving you exposure to real-world production environments and the software development lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Backend Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backend Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, along with foundational knowledge of algorithms, databases, and APIs. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), cloud platforms, and frameworks like Django or Express is commonly expected. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills set top candidates apart in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for building reliable backend systems, integrating with other software, and ensuring efficient team collaboration.

What is the difference between Backend Engineer Intern vs Software Developer Intern?

AspectBackend Engineer InternSoftware Developer Intern
Required SkillsKnowledge of server-side languages, databases, APIsProficiency in programming languages, problem-solving
Work EnvironmentFocus on backend systems, server managementBroader software development tasks, front-end and back-end
Industry UsageCommon in tech companies with backend servicesWidespread across various software development roles

While both roles involve software development internships, a Backend Engineer Intern specializes in server-side and database work, whereas a Software Developer Intern may work on both front-end and back-end tasks. The Backend Engineer Intern role is more focused on backend systems, making it ideal for those interested in server management and APIs.

Job description

Who We Are

Serval is an AI-native automation platform transforming how enterprises operate. We build intelligent agents that understand real-world workflows and execute them end-to-end — replacing manual processes and rigid legacy systems with adaptive, learning software. Founded in early 2024, Serval is already trusted by companies like Fox, Notion, Perplexity, Vercel, and Brex to automate high-volume, high-friction operational work across their organizations.

At the core of Serval is an agentic AI platform that turns natural language into production-grade workflows. Our agents don’t just respond to requests — they reason, take action across systems, and continuously improve with usage. What began with operational use cases has quickly evolved into a horizontal AI automation layer used across IT, HR, Finance, Security, Legal, and Engineering.

Our mission is to eliminate repetitive, manual work across the enterprise and give teams leverage through intelligent automation. Long term, we’re building the universal AI operations layer — a system of agents that sits across business functions and runs the workflows that keep modern companies moving.

We’re backed by leading investors including Sequoia Capital, Redpoint Ventures, Meritech, First Round, General Catalyst, Elad Gil, and others.

Role Overview

As a Software Engineer Intern, Backend at Serval, you’ll work directly on core parts of our platform as we build AI-powered automation for modern IT teams. This is a hands-on internship where you’ll contribute real production code, learn how an early-stage product is built, and see your work shipped to customers.

What You'll Do

  • Work closely with our CTO and founding engineering team to build and extend backend product capabilities.

  • Contribute to backend services that power Serval’s AI-driven automation workflows.

  • Learn how to design, implement, and test scalable systems in a production environment.

  • Help us move quickly toward key product milestones, including shipping and iterating on core platform features.

What You'll Need

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field with an expected graduation date between Dec 2026 - 2028

  • Strong fundamentals in computer science (data structures, algorithms, systems).

  • Familiarity with at least one backend programming language (Go, Java, Python, or similar).

  • Clear communication skills and the ability to learn quickly in a fast-moving environment.

  • Excitement about startups, ownership, and building products from the ground up.

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to modern backend or cloud technologies (APIs, microservices, containers, or cloud platforms).

  • Experience with any part of our stack: Go, gRPC, Kubernetes, React, TypeScript, AWS, or Terraform.

  • Previous internship or project experience at a startup or fast-paced team.

What We Offer

  • Impact: Be a key player in shaping the success of our product and company.

  • Growth: Build a fundamentally new AI product offering with the support of our experienced team and investors. Grow rapidly with the company.

  • Culture: Join a culture that values innovation, ownership, accountability, and fun.
