What is a back end developer?

A Back End Developer is a programmer who specializes in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and application functionality that power websites and web applications. Unlike front end developers, who focus on the visual and interactive elements users see, back end developers work behind the scenes to ensure data is stored, processed, and delivered correctly. They typically use programming languages like Python, Java, Ruby, or PHP, and interact with databases such as MySQL or MongoDB. Their work is crucial for making sure applications run smoothly, securely, and efficiently.

What is a back end developer?

A back end developer is a computer science professional who specializes in functionality that takes place on the server side or backend. As a back end developer, you write code to create software that solves a business need. Your responsibilities are to research the needs of either your employer, or a particular industry, find a problem, and create a software solution. A back end developer differs from a traditional web developer, or front end developer, in that back-end software may not have a user interface or even have exposure to the web.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a back end developer?

To thrive as a Back End Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or Node.js, along with a solid understanding of databases and API design, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with frameworks such as Spring or Django, version control systems like Git, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS or Azure) is often required, with certifications in these areas considered beneficial. Problem-solving, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills that help developers collaborate and address complex technical challenges. These competencies are vital for building reliable, scalable systems that support front-end applications and ensure robust product performance.

What are some common challenges back end developers face when integrating with front-end teams?

Back End Developers often encounter challenges when aligning data structures and APIs with front-end requirements, especially as user interface needs evolve rapidly during development. Effective communication and regular collaboration with front-end developers are essential to ensure that endpoints, data formats, and error handling are well-coordinated. Additionally, maintaining consistent documentation and using tools like Swagger or Postman can help streamline integration and reduce misunderstandings between teams.

Rovex is a robotics startup company based in Gainesville, FL, dedicated to the future of autonomous patient transport and hospital logistics. We are building the hardware and software systems that move people and critical supplies through healthcare environments more safely and efficiently. At Rovex, we're not just building robots; we're engineering solutions that improve the lives of patients and healthcare workers alike.
Role Overview
Rovex is looking for a Backend Engineer who thrives on high-stakes data challenges. This isn't just about building APIs; you will be responsible for the infrastructure that allows our robots to communicate, learn, and operate reliably. You will focus on building the systems that ingest, process, and analyze massive streams of data from our robotic transport units.
Key Responsibilities
  • Scalable Data Pipelines: Design and implement high-throughput data storage and processing systems specifically for robotic transport telemetry and sensor data.
  • Robotics Data Analysis: Build the backend frameworks that perform real-time and post-trip analysis on robotic performance and environment mapping.
  • Infrastructure Optimization: Ensure that the data architecture can scale as our fleet size grows, maintaining low latency for mission-critical robotic feedback loops.
  • System Integration: Work closely with the firmware team to define how data is structured and transmitted from the robot to our storage clusters.
  • Data Security & Integrity: Ensure that all data collected from robotic transport is securely stored and meets industry standards for compliance and reliability.

Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • Experience: 4+ years of backend development with a heavy focus on data architecture.
  • Data Heavy Focus: Proven experience with time-series databases, large-scale data processing (e.g., Kafka, Spark, or custom Python/C++ streams), and cloud/on-prem storage optimization.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong command of backend languages (Python, C++, or Go) and SQL/NoSQL databases.
  • Collaborative Spirit: A preference for in-person collaboration at our Gainesville headquarters.
Bonus Points
  • Experience with ROS/ROS2 (Robot Operating System).
  • Background in geospatial data or fleet management software.
Work Authorization
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Rovex Technologies does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this position.

Benefits
Salary Range: $60,000 - $75,000, Equity eligible
