Job description

GAI Consultants, a national multi-disciplinary engineering firm is seeking qualified and experienced Transportation Construction Supervisors for work on transportation infrastructure projects throughout Western Pennsylvania for PennDOT, PA Turnpike, and local municipalities. This role involves supervision of staff and construction oversight with a wide range of technical responsibilities focused on roadway, highway and bridge construction projects. In this position, you will be responsible for the supervision and oversight of field staff for the inspection, monitoring and documentation of all aspects of construction activities including but not limited to the essential functions outlined below. Essential Functions:

  • Supervision and oversight of a team of inspection staff to monitor, inspect and document daily on-site construction activities.
  • Ensure compliance with the contract documents and applicable state and local codes by the contractor.
  • Responsible for effective communications with contractors, consultants, engineers, job superintendents, and others in matters related to plans, specifications, materials, equipment, and the methods, practices and safety precautions involved in construction and installation of the work.
  • Oversight and reviews of daily inspection progress reports, photographs, discrepancies, and corrective actions.
  • Checks shop drawings and contractors' quotations for variation.
  • Reviews and approves records of quantities and cost of materials used.
  • Reviews reports for erosion and stormwater BMP’s and controls for proper functions.
  • Reviews and approves contractors' periodic progress payment claims and recommended payment.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Attend site meetings.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Ensure compliance with contractor and GAI health and safety plan.
  • Environmental site conditions. Hot weather/cold weather environments.
  • Adherence to project safety requirements, wearing all required personal protective equipment.
  • Must be able to navigate active construction sites including traversing uneven, frozen, and muddy ground around possible live traffic conditions.
  • Travel to and from project sites as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate degree, or Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in civil engineering or construction management. Other BS degrees considered.
  • Proven work experience as a highway inspector or supervisor.
  • Comprehensive understanding of construction standards, PennDOT specifications, and QA/QC principles.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations for computing length, area, and volumes.
  • Ability to utilize technology for documentation. IPAD’s and app navigation.
  • Working in a collaborative and team environment.
  • Eager to lead with ownership, stay focused on what matters most, and thrive in a fast-paced setting that promotes ongoing personal and professional development
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Required Certifications (any or any combination):

  • ACI Concrete Field Technician Grade 1
  • PennDOT Concrete Certification
  • PennDOT Guiderail Installation, Inspection, and Maintenance Certification (preferred)
  • NECEPT Concrete Field Testing Technician
  • NECEPT Asphalt Field Technician
  • NICET Levels II, III, or IV in Highway Construction
  • Minimum of one (1) to three (3) years transportation construction experience as a TCI-3 with required certifications.
  • TCI-S 1 or 2 Classification and pay scale based on experience and certifications.
