Job Summary
The School of Sciences in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics at Clayton State University is seeking applicants for an Assistant Professor of Biology position. The position is an academic year, tenure-track appointment that reports to the Director of the School of Sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to begin on January 1 , 2027. Salary will be commensurate with experience and competitive with comparable programs. In compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, proof of authorization to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.
Part of the University System of Georgia, Clayton State University is located 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta in a lakeside setting. The School of Sciences consists of 20 full-time faculty members and houses degree programs in Biology and Chemistry. We offer courses and labs in a variety of fields with an emphasis on high-quality undergraduate teaching and undergraduate research. In addition, we support the core curriculum and health sciences majors through our non-majors courses. Responsibilities
  • Teach the introductory biology sequences (biology majors and non-majors), and upper-level biology courses. Tenure-track faculty are expected to teach 14 contact hours per week in the fall and spring semesters. The majority of courses are during normal business hours but may occasionally be online or after 5pm on weekdays. (Instruction of students accounts for 60% of the job duties for a tenure-track position).
  • Develop courses in your area of expertise.
  • Engage in scholarly activity leading to presentation and publication. (Scholarship and Professional Development accounts for 20% of the job duties for a tenure-track position)
  • Participate in service to Department, School, University, and community. (Service accounts for 20% of the job duties for a tenure-track position)
  • Serve as a mentor for biology students.

Required Qualifications
  • Doctorate in Biology (ABD candidates will be considered and are encouraged to apply) or closely related discipline.
  • Ability and desire to teach upper division courses and labs in your area of expertise.
  • Ability and desire to teach lower division courses and labs for majors and non-majors.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • Breadth and desire to teach a variety of courses and labs in the field of molecular biology (Examples: Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or other courses in area of expertise), and course sequences for science majors and non-science majors.
  • Ability to teach molecular biology techniques in an undergraduate lab setting.
  • Ability to demonstrate innovative, evidence-based teaching practices.
  • A commitment to working in a department that prioritizes collaboration.
  • Enthusiasm for mentoring undergraduate students in research projects.
  • Ability to utilize course management systems in teaching and/or implementing online courses.
