The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
Responsibilities:
Under the direction of laboratory leadership at all times and with some latitude to work independently, responsible for all of the functions of processing tissue samples for histological diagnosis by a pathologist. Performs grossing, embedding, microtomy, special staining and processing of Immunohistochemistry slides. Has responsibility for equipment maintenance, daily quality control, and adherence to all policies. Communicates with internal and external clients clearly and professionally. Reports to work at assigned UR Labs location/site.
Essential Functions:
  • Performs gross sections of human tissue for examination.
  • Operates laboratory equipment to embed, section, and stain specimens.
  • Operates equipment to perform special staining and Immunohistochemistry stains, as requested. Manual staining may be required.
  • Follows all departmental and organizational policies, procedures, quality objectives, and safety standards and keeps current with changes in laboratory processes and procedures.
  • Participates in the training of other technologists, technicians, and/or residents. Guides and develops professional content for learning experiences.
  • Examines slides under a microscope to ensure that slides meet laboratory quality standards. Identifies issues and troubleshoots for resolution.
  • Performs maintenance on laboratory equipment, including but not limited to preventative, routine, and troubleshooting.
  • Assists in writing and updating procedures as needed. Assumes the additional responsibilities of supervision and assessing competency as qualified/applicable.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Histology or Medical Technology, or Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biology, and
  • 1 year of relevant clinical laboratory experience required.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Previous experience as a Histology Technician preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of anatomy, histology, chemistry preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Histotechnologist, NYSED Histotechnologist license required upon hire or
  • Clinical Laboratory Technologist, NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technologist license required upon hire
