What is an Azure Terraform engineer?

An Azure Terraform engineer specializes in using Terraform, an Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tool, to automate the provisioning and management of resources on Microsoft Azure. They write and maintain Terraform scripts to deploy, configure, and manage Azure infrastructure efficiently and reliably. This role involves ensuring infrastructure consistency, enabling version control, and supporting scalability by automating repetitive tasks. Azure Terraform engineers often collaborate with development, operations, and security teams to implement best practices and optimize cloud environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Azure Terraform engineer?

To thrive as an Azure Terraform Engineer, you need solid experience with Azure cloud services, infrastructure as code (IaC) principles, and proficiency in Terraform scripting, often supported by certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator or HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate. Familiarity with tools like Azure DevOps, Git, and CI/CD pipelines is typically required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and effective communication skills are crucial for implementing and maintaining scalable cloud infrastructures in team environments. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring secure, efficient, and reliable deployment of cloud resources that meet organizational needs.

How does an Azure Terraform specialist typically collaborate with development and operations teams during cloud infrastructure projects?

As an Azure Terraform specialist, you will frequently work closely with both development and operations teams to design, provision, and manage cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC). You may be responsible for translating architectural requirements into Terraform modules, ensuring infrastructure is version-controlled, and facilitating automated deployments. Regular communication is essential to align on project goals, troubleshoot deployment issues, and implement best practices for security and scalability. This cross-functional collaboration helps deliver reliable, repeatable infrastructure solutions that support agile software delivery.

What is the difference between Azure Terraform vs Azure DevOps Engineer?

AspectAzure Terraform
Primary FocusInfrastructure as Code (IaC) for provisioning cloud resources
CertificationsTerraform Associate, Azure certifications
Work EnvironmentCloud infrastructure teams, DevOps environments
Tools UsedTerraform, Azure CLI, Azure Portal

Azure Terraform specialists focus on automating cloud resource deployment using Terraform, while Azure DevOps Engineers manage CI/CD pipelines and overall project automation. Both roles often collaborate but have distinct core responsibilities. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right skills for cloud infrastructure versus development workflows.

Job description

Job Overview

Owns architecture, implementation, reliability, and lifecycle management of Veradigm’s database platform across multiple engines and cloud providers. Designs new database systems end‑to‑end, from inception through production, including engine and deployment‑model selection, server and storage architecture, multi‑cloud infrastructure, and high‑availability and disaster‑recovery posture. Owns 24×7 production reliability and serves as the final escalation point for major outages, complex performance incidents, and cross‑team database 911s. Acts as senior technical authority and subject matter expert across multiple database technologies (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Snowflake) and AWS and Azure. Sets technical direction for major platform initiatives, including AI‑augmented database operations.

Responsibilities
  • Determine database architecture for new business use cases, including engine selection, deployment model (IaaS vs. PaaS), topology, sizing, integration patterns, and availability targets up to 99.99% (4 nines).
  • Design and implement multi‑cloud database infrastructure across AWS and Azure, including server, storage, and network architecture tuned for top engine performance.
  • Author and review database infrastructure‑as‑code (Terraform) for provisioning, configuration management, and lifecycle automation.
  • Oversee the security, integrity, and performance of databases across the production estate, including access controls, encryption at rest and in transit, audit logging, HIPAA‑aligned PHI protection, vulnerability management, and database integrity validation.
  • Implement monitoring, observability, and alerting across all database systems and cloud platforms, delegate alert response to team members, and audit incident resolution.
  • Lead complex performance triage and 911 response across product engineering teams.
  • Provide technical leadership for peers and delegate tasks for both major and minor projects.
  • Independently implement and document enhancement requests.
  • Review and approve technical design specifications.
  • Design, audit, and test high‑availability and disaster‑recovery architectures engineered to meet 99.99% availability SLAs, including cross‑region failover, replication topology, RPO/RTO planning, immutable and air‑gapped backup architectures for ransomware protection, point‑in‑time recovery, and validated restore drills.
  • Serve as final escalation point for database issues escalated by Database Engineers and partner engineering teams.
  • Own multiple concurrent minor or major database platform projects from concept to completion, including requirements gathering, architectural design, implementation, task delegation, schedule creation, deployment, testing, and handoff of the technology solution to the business.
  • Set technical direction for AI‑augmented database operations, including LLM‑assisted design, ML‑driven anomaly detection, automated performance tuning, and natural‑language operational tooling.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Work Experience: 10+ years relevant work experience; 2–3 years at Expert level or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Certifications: ITIL Foundations, MTA Database Fundamentals, MCSA Database Administrator, Azure Fundamentals, Azure Data Fundamentals, Microsoft Certified Azure Data Engineer Associate.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Collaborative teamwork and constructive feedback from senior engineers.
    • Excellent partnership and consultation to product and engineering teams.
    • Expert knowledge of multiple database engines spanning relational (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL), document and key‑value stores (MongoDB, DynamoDB), and cloud data warehousing (Snowflake). Includes engine internals, configuration, and operational characteristics under production load.
    • Expert knowledge of database performance monitoring, tuning, and triage at the engine, server, and storage layers across multiple platforms.
    • Expert knowledge of database scripting and automation languages (T‑SQL, PowerShell, Python, Bash) and of infrastructure‑as‑code (Terraform) for database provisioning and lifecycle management.
    • Expert knowledge of multi‑cloud database engineering across AWS and Azure, including managed database services (RDS, Aurora, Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, DynamoDB, Snowflake) and self‑managed engine deployments on cloud compute.
    • Expert knowledge of database server and storage architecture tuned for engine performance: instance class and CPU/memory profile selection, NUMA awareness, OS‑level tuning, IOPS planning, volume type selection, and network architecture.
    • Expert knowledge of designing database systems to high‑availability SLAs of 99.99% (4 nines) and above, including cross‑region failover automation, replication topology, RPO/RTO planning, ransomware‑resilient backup architectures, and recovery validation.
    • Expert knowledge of change management principles and the ability to act as a proactive change agent.
    • Expert knowledge of project management.
Work Arrangements
  • Standard work week or as defined by assignment requirements.
  • Primarily works in a standard office environment or remotely.
  • May require after‑hours, on‑call support and/or holidays. On‑call and after hours work during peak times including end of month/quarter/year; during this time PTO is limited to meet business needs.
  • Travel: Up to 10% travel may be required.
