They are responsible for configuring cloud infrastructure, automating deployments, ensuring security and compliance, and supporting application development and operations. These engineers collaborate with development and operations teams to implement best practices for scalability, reliability, and cost optimization in the Azure cloud environment.

What are some common challenges Azure Platform Engineers face when managing cloud infrastructure at scale?

Azure Platform Engineers frequently encounter challenges related to automating deployments, ensuring resource security, and optimizing costs as cloud environments grow. Managing configurations across multiple subscriptions, maintaining compliance with organizational policies, and troubleshooting performance issues in distributed services are also common. Collaboration with development, security, and operations teams is essential to address these challenges efficiently, often requiring strong communication and problem-solving skills.

THE OPPORTUNITY

This Senior Platform Engineer position works onsite in our Alameda, CA location for Lingo.

As a Senior Platform Engineer at Lingo, you will be a hands-on contributor to the DevOps and SRE function that keeps our consumer biosensing platform running reliably for users around the world. You will work alongside the Platform Engineer Lead and the Senior Manager of Platform Engineering to build, operate, and continuously improve the cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring systems, and operational practices that Lingo's engineering teams depend on every day.

This is a role for someone who takes pride in operational excellence, enjoys working across a broad technology stack, and wants to grow their skills in both cloud infrastructure and reliability engineering. You are comfortable working in Azure, confident writing infrastructure-as-code, and motivated by the challenge of keeping a consumer health platform available and performant at scale.

You will be part of a globally distributed team spanning the US, Spain, and India, contributing to a shared platform that enables dozens of engineers across three geographies to ship high-quality software with confidence.

What You'll Work On

  • Build, provision, and maintain Lingo's cloud infrastructure on Azure using infrastructure-as-code tools, following established patterns and contributing to the improvement of those patterns over time.

  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines for Lingo's engineering teams, implementing deployment automation, environment promotion logic, and pipeline health monitoring that supports reliable and frequent software delivery.

  • Support Lingo's SRE practice by contributing to SLO and SLI definitions, building and maintaining alerting rules, and participating in on-call rotations as part of a shared 24x7 operational coverage model.

  • Monitor, triage, and respond to platform and infrastructure incidents, contributing to root cause analysis and implementing remediations that prevent recurrence.

  • Build and maintain observability tooling across Lingo's production environment, including dashboards, log pipelines, distributed tracing integrations, and metrics collection for platform and application services.

  • Implement and maintain cloud security controls in collaboration with the Security team, including identity and access management, network security configurations, and compliance tooling for HIPAA, GDPR, and PCI requirements.

  • Contribute to disaster recovery and backup processes, ensuring Lingo's production systems can be restored reliably and within committed recovery time objectives.

  • Partner with product and feature engineering teams to support their deployment needs, onboard them to platform tooling, and reduce friction in the path from development to production.

  • Document infrastructure, runbooks, deployment procedures, and operational processes in a way that supports knowledge sharing across a globally distributed team.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

  • 5+ years of experience in cloud infrastructure, DevOps, or platform engineering with hands-on work in a production environment.

  • Working knowledge of Azure cloud services, with practical experience provisioning and managing infrastructure across Azure compute, networking, storage, and identity services.

  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tooling, preferably Terraform or Bicep, including writing, reviewing, and maintaining reusable modules in a team environment.

  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipeline design and operation, including experience building or maintaining pipelines in Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or equivalent tools.

  • Understanding of SRE principles including SLOs, alerting, on-call practices, and incident response workflows.

  • Experience with observability tooling for monitoring, logging, and distributed tracing in a cloud-native environment.

  • Basic understanding of cloud security practices, including identity and access management, network security groups, and secrets management.

  • Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineering teams across multiple time zones.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Azure-native services such as Azure Kubernetes Service, Azure DevOps, Azure Monitor, or Azure Security Center.

  • Familiarity with container orchestration using Kubernetes or equivalent, including deployment, scaling, and operational management.

  • Experience supporting IoT, biosensor, or real-time data platforms where operational reliability is critical.

  • Exposure to SRE practices including error budget management, post-incident review processes, and toil reduction.

  • Experience with observability platforms such as Datadog, New Relic, Grafana, or equivalent in a production context.

  • Familiarity with cloud security and compliance frameworks including HIPAA, GDPR, or PCI in an engineering context.

  • Prior experience working in a globally distributed engineering team.
