What is an Azure DevOps engineer?

An Azure DevOps engineer is a professional who specializes in implementing and managing DevOps practices using Microsoft's Azure platform. They are responsible for automating processes, setting up continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, managing infrastructure as code, monitoring applications, and ensuring collaboration between development and operations teams. Their goal is to streamline software development and deployment while maintaining security and reliability in cloud environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Azure DevOps engineer?

To thrive as an Azure DevOps Engineer, you need a strong background in software development, cloud computing (especially Microsoft Azure), and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Azure DevOps Services, PowerShell, Git, Docker, Kubernetes, and certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure DevOps Engineer Expert are highly valuable. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help you navigate cross-functional teams and adapt to evolving project needs. These skills enable the efficient delivery, automation, and management of applications and infrastructure within dynamic enterprise environments.

What are the most common challenges faced by Azure DevOps professionals in managing CI/CD pipelines?

Azure DevOps professionals often face challenges such as integrating diverse tools into the CI/CD pipeline, maintaining security throughout the deployment process, and ensuring consistency across multiple environments. Balancing speed of deployment with quality assurance is also a frequent concern, especially when collaborating with multiple development teams. Regular communication with stakeholders and ongoing monitoring of pipeline health are crucial to proactively address these issues.

Azure DevOps Engineer III (Principle) (78176)

Centurion

Sterling, VA • On-site

$53.25 - $73/hr

Full-time

Re-posted 9 days ago

Job description

Centurion is proud to be a leading provider of comprehensive healthcare services to correctional facilities, state hospitals, and community mental health centers nationwide.
Role Summary
The Azure DevOps Engineer III is a senior technical leader responsible for designing and evolving the organization's DevOps delivery approach across Azure environments. This role leads complex and ambiguous troubleshooting, defines and enforces pipeline and IaC standards, and drives measurable improvements in deployment reliability, security, and operational maturity. The Tier 3 engineer mentors other engineers, leads cross-team initiatives, and ensures that CI/CD, Terraform, and Ansible implementations scale securely and consistently.
Key Responsibilities
  • Architect and standardize CI/CD pipeline frameworks in GitHub Enterprise Actions (templates, reusable workflows, governance patterns).
  • Lead design and implementation of advanced deployment strategies (progressive delivery approaches, environment promotion controls, rollback standards).
  • Establish Terraform module strategy (versioning, testing/validation, structure conventions) and lead modernization of IaC patterns for scale.
  • Drive Ansible strategy for configuration management (role standards, inventory structure, secrets practices, drift prevention patterns).
  • Serve as escalation lead for high-impact pipeline/deployment failures and complex Azure operational issues involving VMs, AKS, and App Services.
  • Define observability standards for deployments and platform health using Azure Monitor and Log Analytics; ensure alerts are meaningful and reduce noise.
  • Lead DevSecOps integration maturity (policy and controls embedded into pipelines, consistent enforcement of secure delivery practices).
  • Partner across engineering, infrastructure, and security functions to streamline release processes and remove systemic bottlenecks.
  • Mentor Tier 1-2 engineers; raise team capability through coaching, design reviews, and improved documentation/runbooks.
Scope, Complexity & Impact
  • Scope: Leads DevOps engineering across multiple products/teams and environments; owns standards and delivery frameworks, not just individual pipelines.
  • Complexity: High; solves ambiguous, cross-domain issues spanning CI/CD, infrastructure automation, security controls, and runtime platform behavior.
  • Impact: Delivers measurable reliability and security improvements; reduces deployment risk and time-to-release; multiplies the effectiveness of multiple teams by standardizing and removing toil.
  • Autonomy: Operates with high independence; makes design decisions, sets standards, and drives cross-team alignment.

  • Deep expertise in CI/CD engineering with GitHub Enterprise Actions, including scalable workflow design and governance.
  • Advanced Terraform proficiency: modular architecture, lifecycle management, state considerations, validation/testing discipline.
  • Advanced Ansible proficiency: role design, idempotent automation, maintainable playbook architectures.
  • Strong Azure depth across networking, identity, and security; able to assess design tradeoffs and operational risk.
  • Strong scripting/software mindset (PowerShell/Bash/Python) to build tooling, helpers, and automation accelerators.
  • Solid container and Kubernetes (AKS) operational depth and troubleshooting capability.
  • Technical leadership: ability to influence without authority, run design discussions, and drive standards adoption.
Experience & Education
  • Typically 6-10+ years of relevant experience, with demonstrated leadership in DevOps/platform delivery engineering.
  • Bachelor's degree in IT/CS or related field preferred; equivalent experience accepted.
  • Strongly preferred: Microsoft DevOps Engineer Expert and at least one relevant automation credential (Terraform/Ansible).
