What is an Azure Developer Operations Engineer?

Azure Developer Operations Engineers, often referred to as Azure DevOps Engineers, are IT professionals who specialize in automating, deploying, and managing applications and infrastructure on Microsoft Azure cloud services. They work at the intersection of development and operations, implementing continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, monitoring systems, managing cloud resources, and ensuring application reliability and scalability. Their role often involves collaborating with developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to streamline software delivery and improve operational efficiency using Azure tools and services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Azure Developer Operations Engineer?

To thrive as an Azure Developer Operations Engineer, you need expertise in cloud computing, infrastructure as code, automation, and strong knowledge of Microsoft Azure services, often supported by a relevant degree and Azure certifications such as AZ-400. Familiarity with DevOps tools like Azure DevOps, PowerShell, ARM templates, and CI/CD pipelines is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring reliable, scalable deployments and seamless collaboration between development and operations teams in cloud environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Azure Developer Operations Engineers when implementing CI/CD pipelines?

Azure Developer Operations Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating diverse tools and technologies, managing permissions and security across multiple environments, and ensuring smooth automation of deployments. Troubleshooting pipeline failures and optimizing build and release times are also frequent tasks, requiring strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Collaboration with development, QA, and IT teams is crucial to address environment inconsistencies and to align deployment processes with business needs.

What is the difference between Azure Developer Operations Engineer vs Azure Cloud Engineer?

Job description

Jacksonville, United States | Posted on 07/07/2026

Key Responsibilities
  • Own full-stack product features across the complete SDLC: requirements analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and post-release support.
  • Develop, test, and maintain production-quality Python code for back-end services, APIs, and integrations.
  • Use AI-assisted coding tools and Generative AI workflows to accelerate development, prototyping, and debugging — what is commonly called "vibe coding".
  • Build prototypes and proofs-of-concept rapidly across both front-end and back-end layers to validate product hypotheses and external integrations.
  • Integrate with external APIs, SDKs, and Large Language Model platforms.
  • Write and maintain comprehensive test coverage: unit tests, integration tests, end-to-end tests, and contribute to test automation strategy.
  • Own deployment of features through CI/CD pipelines: build automation, environment promotion, release management, and post-deployment validation.
  • Monitor production systems, contribute to observability and alerting, diagnose and resolve incidents, and participate in post-mortems.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, and architecture decisions across both back-end and front-end concerns.
  • Maintain clear technical documentation, API references, and developer-facing materials.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, QA, and DevOps engineers across the full delivery cycle.
Required Qualifications
  • 0–3 years of professional full-stack development experience. Recent graduates with strong full-stack project portfolios are encouraged to apply.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, including familiarity with normal back-end frameworks (FastAPI, Flask, or Django) and libraries (Pandas, NumPy, requests, async/await patterns).
  • Working knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, responsive design, and modern front-end build tooling (Vite, Webpack, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to work across the complete SDLC: requirements, design, code, test, deploy, support.
  • Hands-on experience using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate development workflows.
  • Proven experience writing automated tests: unit tests (pytest, Jest, or equivalent), integration tests, and component tests for front-end.
  • Experience with deployment workflows: CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or equivalent), build automation, and release management.
  • Working knowledge of REST APIs, JSON, HTTP, authentication patterns, and common integration approaches.
  • Solid foundation in Git, version control workflows, code reviews, and modern engineering tooling.
  • Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills across both back-end and front-end layers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical decisions and trade-offs clearly.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience integrating with Large Language Model APIs from any major provider.
  • Experience with prompt engineering, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), agentic workflows, or LLM-powered application patterns.
  • Familiarity with Next.js, server-side rendering, or static-site generation.
  • Experience with end-to-end testing frameworks (Playwright, Cypress, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with major cloud platforms, containerization (Docker), and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, CloudFormation), observability tools (Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalent), and production monitoring.
  • Familiarity with vector databases, embeddings, or AI/ML toolchains.
  • Contributions to open-source projects, technical blog posts, hackathon participation, or a public GitHub portfolio.
  • Internship or project experience in product engineering, developer tools, or enterprise SaaS platforms.
  • Exposure to design systems, accessibility (WCAG) standards, or component library development.
