What is an Azure Developer Operations Engineer?

Azure Developer Operations Engineers, often referred to as Azure DevOps Engineers, are IT professionals who specialize in automating, deploying, and managing applications and infrastructure on Microsoft Azure cloud services. They work at the intersection of development and operations, implementing continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, monitoring systems, managing cloud resources, and ensuring application reliability and scalability. Their role often involves collaborating with developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to streamline software delivery and improve operational efficiency using Azure tools and services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Azure Developer Operations Engineer?

To thrive as an Azure Developer Operations Engineer, you need expertise in cloud computing, infrastructure as code, automation, and strong knowledge of Microsoft Azure services, often supported by a relevant degree and Azure certifications such as AZ-400. Familiarity with DevOps tools like Azure DevOps, PowerShell, ARM templates, and CI/CD pipelines is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring reliable, scalable deployments and seamless collaboration between development and operations teams in cloud environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Azure Developer Operations Engineers when implementing CI/CD pipelines?

Azure Developer Operations Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating diverse tools and technologies, managing permissions and security across multiple environments, and ensuring smooth automation of deployments. Troubleshooting pipeline failures and optimizing build and release times are also frequent tasks, requiring strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Collaboration with development, QA, and IT teams is crucial to address environment inconsistencies and to align deployment processes with business needs.

Job description

About Pay-i
At Pay-i, we are solving one of enterprise AI's most critical challenges: proving ROI of GenAI investments. While global GenAI spend races toward $600B by 2028, 72% of CIOs cite measurement and forecasting as their top blocker, and only 13% of business leaders report significant enterprise-level value from GenAI. We are the only platform that transforms every model call, prompt, and agent step into CFO-grade metrics, providing enterprises the financial transparency to identify winning use cases, optimize costs, and prove impact.
Founded by ex-Microsoft leaders with 20+ years of experience each, Pay-i is a seed-stage company backed by five venture capital firms and executive/C-suite angels from Microsoft, Twilio, Zoom, and more. If you are passionate about selling products that fundamentally change how enterprises scale their AI initiatives, join us in bringing the system of record for GenAI ROI to market.
The Opportunity
As a DevOps Engineer, you will be a key member of our growing DevOps team, responsible for the design, deployment, and updating of our cloud infrastructure across multiple clouds. You will work closely with the development team on design and features. This role is crucial to our expansion as we broaden our product's reach to all three major clouds and on-premises solutions.
What You'll Do
Your impact will span across our entire infrastructure, including:
  • Creating and managing infrastructure deployments on AWS, Azure, GCP, and on-premises.
  • Supporting and validating deployments to ensure they are robust, reliable, and maintaining high availability and uptime.
  • Working closely with the development team to define infrastructure requirements.
  • Automating and supporting the deployment into various cloud and on-premise environments
  • As a part of the development team, monitoring active deployments and participating in live site activities
  • Contributing code as necessary, with opportunities for career growth in this area if desired.

What You Bring
Required Qualifications
  • 7 years of experience in a Senior DevOps or related role.
  • Strong proficiency with Terraform, ARM/Bicep, and Cloud Formation.
  • Proficient with Azure DevOps, Azure Pipelines, git, and bash.
  • Demonstrated success in fast-paced "bring up/tear down" environments.
  • Self-directed with strong technical opinions.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, experimentation, and rapid iteration.
  • Experience deploying and managing Kubernetes clusters and familiarity with cloud-native infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 10 years of experience in a Senior DevOps or related role.
  • Experience with Azure and AWS Marketplaces
  • Experience interacting with and supporting customers.
  • Developer experience is a bonus.

What We Offer
  • Comprehensive health insurance.
  • Discretionary time off.
  • Opportunity to grow with the company.
  • Fast-paced, execution-focused environment with clear goals.
  • Collaboration with and mentoring from an extremely experienced founding team.

Location
  • Based in Bellevue, WA.
  • Local, in-office presence required.
  • Occasional hybrid arrangements possible

Why Pay-i?
You'll join an extremely experienced team with clear goals and strong industry connections. We're well-funded, well-connected, and set up for success - now we need the right people to execute on our vision. As one of our early technical hires, you'll have the opportunity to shape our engineering culture and grow with the company.
Pay-i is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
