What is an Azure Developer Operations Engineer?

Azure Developer Operations Engineers, often referred to as Azure DevOps Engineers, are IT professionals who specialize in automating, deploying, and managing applications and infrastructure on Microsoft Azure cloud services. They work at the intersection of development and operations, implementing continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, monitoring systems, managing cloud resources, and ensuring application reliability and scalability. Their role often involves collaborating with developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to streamline software delivery and improve operational efficiency using Azure tools and services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Azure Developer Operations Engineer?

To thrive as an Azure Developer Operations Engineer, you need expertise in cloud computing, infrastructure as code, automation, and strong knowledge of Microsoft Azure services, often supported by a relevant degree and Azure certifications such as AZ-400. Familiarity with DevOps tools like Azure DevOps, PowerShell, ARM templates, and CI/CD pipelines is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring reliable, scalable deployments and seamless collaboration between development and operations teams in cloud environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Azure Developer Operations Engineers when implementing CI/CD pipelines?

Azure Developer Operations Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating diverse tools and technologies, managing permissions and security across multiple environments, and ensuring smooth automation of deployments. Troubleshooting pipeline failures and optimizing build and release times are also frequent tasks, requiring strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Collaboration with development, QA, and IT teams is crucial to address environment inconsistencies and to align deployment processes with business needs.

Job description

Senior Azure DevOps Engineer

Location: Chicago, IL
Work Arrangement: Hybrid Onsite every Tuesday and Wednesday
Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Azure DevOps Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and modernization of cloud infrastructure and developer platforms across multiple business units.

This is a highly hands-on senior role for someone who can architect solutions, build them, and provide technical leadership. The ideal candidate has deep Azure and Terraform expertise, strong experience with Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions, and a proven ability to design CI/CD platforms, build developer self-service capabilities, and establish secure, scalable engineering standards.

You will work across five business units and partner closely with engineering, architecture, security, and application teams. You should be comfortable working independently, challenging technical decisions when appropriate, and mentoring other engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and support enterprise-scale Microsoft Azure infrastructure, including networking, identity, security, governance, compute, and platform services.
  • Develop reusable, enterprise-grade Terraform modules, templates, and Infrastructure as Code standards.
  • Design and lead CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions, with an emphasis on automation, security, scalability, and developer experience.
  • Lead the migration of repositories and pipelines from Azure DevOps to GitHub/GitHub Actions.
  • Design and govern Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) environments, including namespaces, RBAC, security, networking, access controls, and governance.
  • Build or enhance developer self-service platforms and portals, ideally using Backstage, with automated infrastructure provisioning and appropriate security guardrails.
  • Establish reusable engineering patterns and standards that can be adopted across multiple teams and business units.
  • Support infrastructure requirements for Azure AI workloads, including Azure AI Foundry, Azure AI Search, Document Intelligence, model deployment, private networking, identity, and security.
  • Lead technical initiatives from architecture through implementation and provide hands-on guidance to engineering teams.
  • Mentor engineers and help teams improve their Azure, Terraform, Kubernetes, CI/CD, and platform engineering capabilities.
  • Make architectural recommendations, evaluate technology options, and constructively challenge decisions when better approaches are available.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong, hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure infrastructure in enterprise environments.
  • Extensive experience with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code, including reusable modules and enterprise templates.
  • Advanced experience with Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions, including repository and pipeline migrations.
  • Strong hands-on AKS/Kubernetes experience, including security, namespaces, RBAC, networking, access controls, and governance.
  • Proven experience designing and building CI/CD pipelines, rather than only maintaining pipelines created by others.
  • Experience with platform engineering or developer self-service, with Backstage experience strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of infrastructure supporting Azure AI services, including AI Foundry, AI Search, Document Intelligence, model deployment, and private-network configurations.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate at a senior technical leadership level, make independent decisions, and drive projects with minimal direction.
  • Strong communication, mentoring, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Ability to influence and guide engineering teams in an assertive but collaborative manner.
  • Willingness to work onsite in Chicago every Tuesday and Wednesday.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in financial services or another highly regulated industry.
  • Relevant Azure certifications such as Azure Solutions Architect Expert or Azure DevOps Engineer Expert.
  • Experience with Azure Policy, Microsoft Entra ID, Private Link, Key Vault, managed identities, and enterprise cloud governance.
  • Experience establishing enterprise GitHub standards, reusable workflows, security controls, and developer platforms.
