Azure Developer Operations Engineer information

What is an Azure Developer Operations Engineer?

Azure Developer Operations Engineers, often referred to as Azure DevOps Engineers, are IT professionals who specialize in automating, deploying, and managing applications and infrastructure on Microsoft Azure cloud services. They work at the intersection of development and operations, implementing continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, monitoring systems, managing cloud resources, and ensuring application reliability and scalability. Their role often involves collaborating with developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to streamline software delivery and improve operational efficiency using Azure tools and services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Azure Developer Operations Engineer?

To thrive as an Azure Developer Operations Engineer, you need expertise in cloud computing, infrastructure as code, automation, and strong knowledge of Microsoft Azure services, often supported by a relevant degree and Azure certifications such as AZ-400. Familiarity with DevOps tools like Azure DevOps, PowerShell, ARM templates, and CI/CD pipelines is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring reliable, scalable deployments and seamless collaboration between development and operations teams in cloud environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Azure Developer Operations Engineers when implementing CI/CD pipelines?

Azure Developer Operations Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating diverse tools and technologies, managing permissions and security across multiple environments, and ensuring smooth automation of deployments. Troubleshooting pipeline failures and optimizing build and release times are also frequent tasks, requiring strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Collaboration with development, QA, and IT teams is crucial to address environment inconsistencies and to align deployment processes with business needs.

What is the difference between Azure Developer Operations Engineer vs Azure Cloud Engineer?

Primary FocusDevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, automationCloud infrastructure, deployment, and management
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, DevOps pipelines, automation toolsCloud infrastructure, network setup, resource provisioning
Industry UsageSoftware development, DevOps teams, SaaS companiesIT infrastructure, cloud services, enterprise solutions

The Azure Developer Operations Engineer primarily focuses on integrating development and operations through automation, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps practices. In contrast, the Azure Cloud Engineer concentrates on managing and deploying cloud infrastructure and resources. Both roles require Azure certifications and are vital in cloud-based organizations, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

Key responsibilities

  • Build and maintain the Infrastructure as Code foundation for Azure and hybrid workloads.

  • Automate deployment, configuration, secrets management, and environment consistency across development, staging, and production.

  • Build monitoring, alerting, and logging systems to ensure platform reliability and support incident response.

Job description

Who we are: At Arkana Laboratories, everyone has an important role to fill. Come join us and be a part of a team dedicated to making life better for those who need it most.

This place is packed with super-smart people who do their best work together. We work hard every day to advance our understanding of disease and provide world-class care to our patients in hopes of leaving our corner of the world a little better than we found it. While we are committed to improving the lives of thousands of patients, we never lose sight of the realization that they are the reason we get to create change in our field.

Built on generosity, teamwork, and the freedom to try new things, we take great pride in our work. Great ideas come from everywhere in this company and we celebrate each success and failure for the opportunity it gives us to keep reaching. For more than twenty years after our founder, Dr. Patrick Walker, wrote his goals on the back of a napkin, our people, culture, and values have remained strong.

About the Role

Arkana is the nation's leading renal pathology practice. We hold one of the richest kidney biopsy datasets in the world, and we are building the infrastructure to train clinical AI models on it. That includes an NVIDIA Blackwell class GPU cluster that almost no one in healthcare, and no one else in Central Arkansas, can match. It sits alongside a hybrid cloud platform, a laboratory information system built in house, and clinical AI products used by nephrologists every day. You will automate how all of it is built, shipped, and observed.

The Senior DevOps Engineer owns the automation layer across our hybrid environment: Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, and observability spanning Azure and on premises systems. You are the connective tissue between technology operations and our software engineering teams, making sure the platforms they deploy to are reproducible, monitored, and boring in the best sense. You report to the Director of Technology Operations and work alongside a principal infrastructure engineer and a senior systems engineer.

What You'll Do

Infrastructure as Code and automation

  • Build and maintain the IaC foundation (Terraform, Bicep, or similar) for our Azure environment and hybrid workloads
  • Drive automation first practices across the team: if it's done twice by hand, it becomes code
  • Manage configuration, secrets, and environment consistency across development, staging, and production

CI/CD and delivery

  • Own build and deployment pipelines for our custom applications, including Arkana Connect, our analytics platforms, and the laboratory information system built in house
  • Partner with software engineering teams on release engineering, environment provisioning, and deployment safety in a clinical setting
  • Support containerized workloads and orchestration where they fit the problem

Cloud operations

  • Operate and optimize our Azure environment day to day: cost, performance, identity, and governance, with some AWS exposure
  • Implement cloud guardrails that keep HIPAA and HITRUST compliance built into the platform rather than bolted on
  • Contribute to the hybrid architecture alongside the principal infrastructure engineer, including automation for the GPU and AI infrastructure

Observability and reliability

  • Build monitoring, alerting, and logging that tells the team about problems before users do
  • Define and improve reliability practices: SLOs where they make sense, post-incident reviews that change things
  • Reduce toil measurably, for yourself and everyone around you
What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of DevOps, platform, or infrastructure automation experience supporting production systems
  • Strong hands-on Azure experience (AWS familiarity a plus) with real IaC depth in Terraform, Bicep, or similar
  • Solid CI/CD engineering experience (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar) including pipelines you built rather than inherited
  • Working knowledge of containers and orchestration, scripting fluency (PowerShell, Python, or Bash), and Git centered workflows
  • Experience in healthcare or another regulated environment preferred, or the judgment to operate in one
Bonus Points
  • Observability stack experience (Azure Monitor, Grafana, Prometheus, or similar)
  • Automation for GPU, HPC, or ML infrastructure
  • Database and data pipeline operations in cloud environments
  • Relevant certifications preferred: Azure DevOps Engineer Expert, HashiCorp Terraform Associate or Pro, Azure Administrator Associate, or equivalent AWS/GCP certifications
Location and Schedule

This position is onsite at our Little Rock headquarters. The hardware is here, the lab is here, and the team is here. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm, onsite in Little Rock, Arkansas.

What we offer: We know that health is more than doctor visits and life is more than work. We work hard at Arkana but in turn provide competitive salaries and generous benefit offerings.

Specifically, we offer the following benefits to full-time employees:

  • Competitive salary
