What is an AWS Solutions Architect and what does relocation involve?

An AWS Solutions Architect is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains scalable, reliable, and cost-effective cloud solutions using Amazon Web Services (AWS). Their responsibilities often include evaluating business requirements, selecting appropriate AWS services, and ensuring best practices for security and performance. Relocation for this role means moving to a different city, state, or country as required by the employer, often to work more closely with a specific team or client. Companies may offer relocation assistance packages to help cover moving expenses. This is common in tech hubs or when specialized cloud expertise is needed in a particular location.

What are some common challenges AWS Solutions Architects face when relocating for a new role?

Relocating as an AWS Solutions Architect often involves adapting to a new company culture and quickly understanding the specific cloud infrastructure needs of the organization. You may encounter challenges such as building relationships with unfamiliar teams, learning new business processes, and getting up to speed with regional compliance or data residency requirements. Successful candidates are flexible, proactive in networking, and able to leverage AWS best practices while tailoring solutions to local business needs. Many companies provide relocation support and onboarding programs to help smooth this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AWS Solutions Architect, especially when considering relocation, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AWS Solutions Architect, you need expertise in cloud architecture, networking, security, and a strong understanding of AWS services, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field and AWS certification (such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect). Familiarity with tools like AWS CloudFormation, EC2, S3, and monitoring systems is crucial for designing and deploying scalable solutions. Strong communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are vital soft skills, particularly when adjusting to new environments and collaborating with diverse teams. These skills ensure you can design robust cloud solutions, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and integrate seamlessly into new organizational and geographic settings.

Job Objective

As a Solutions Architect – Migration and Modernization at Cloudelligent, you will take end-to-end ownership of designing, selling, and delivering secure, compliant, and scalable AWS solutions. This is a hands-on role that combines presales responsibilities with deep technical execution. You will lead architecture design, support presales engagements, and implement AWS Control Tower–based landing zones while driving complex cloud migration and modernization initiatives for customers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead presales technical engagements by working closely with sales teams to understand customer requirements, design solutions, and contribute to proposals, estimates, and statements of work.

  • Architect, build, and operate multi-account AWS environments using AWS Control Tower, AWS Organizations, Landing Zones, IAM, and Service Control Policies (SCPs).

  • Own cloud migration initiatives from discovery and assessment through execution, validation, and post-migration optimization.

  • Hands-on implementation of secure, compliant, and well-architected AWS solutions aligned with AWS Well-Architected Framework and regulatory requirements.

  • Design, develop, and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) using Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, and/or AWS CDK to automate provisioning and governance.

  • Implement identity, security, and access management solutions using IAM, AWS SSO, encryption, and security monitoring services.

  • Build and integrate CI/CD pipelines and automation workflows to support scalable and repeatable cloud deployments.

  • Design and implement monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions to ensure operational excellence and security visibility.

  • Conduct AWS Well-Architected Framework Reviews (WAFR) and lead remediation efforts.

  • Advise customers on cloud governance, compliance, and security best practices.

  • Drive cloud cost optimization initiatives using AWS cost management tools and FinOps best practices.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience designing and implementing AWS architectures in customer-facing roles.

  • Strong expertise with AWS Control Tower, AWS Organizations, Landing Zones, IAM, and Service Control Policies (SCPs).

  • Proven experience leading cloud migration and modernization projects.

  • Advanced experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or AWS CDK.

  • Strong understanding of AWS security, compliance, monitoring, and operational best practices.

  • Experience supporting presales activities including solution design, technical presentations, and client workshops.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with a delivery-focused mindset.

Highly Preferred

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional or Associate.

  • AWS Certified Security – Specialty.

  • Background working in an AWS Partner or consulting environment.
