What is AWS networking?

AWS Networking refers to the suite of cloud-based networking services and tools provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS) that help users design, deploy, and manage networks in the cloud. These services include Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), Elastic Load Balancing, AWS Direct Connect, Route 53, and more. AWS Networking enables secure, scalable, and highly available connectivity between resources within AWS, as well as to on-premises environments and the internet. It is essential for organizations that want to efficiently manage cloud infrastructure, optimize performance, and maintain security.

How does an AWS networking specialist typically collaborate with other IT teams within an organization?

As an AWS Networking specialist, you will frequently collaborate with cloud architects, security teams, and DevOps engineers to design, implement, and troubleshoot network infrastructure in AWS. This often includes working closely with application teams to ensure secure and efficient connectivity, assisting security teams with network compliance, and supporting DevOps teams with automation of networking tasks. Regular communication and cross-team meetings are common, as networking changes can impact many parts of the cloud environment. Effective collaboration skills and a proactive approach to sharing knowledge are key for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AWS networking specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AWS Networking Specialist, you need a strong understanding of cloud networking concepts, TCP/IP, VPC design, and a background in computer science or IT, often supported by AWS certifications like AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty. Familiarity with AWS networking services (such as VPC, Route 53, Direct Connect), infrastructure-as-code tools like CloudFormation, and network monitoring systems is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial for diagnosing issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These capabilities ensure secure, efficient, and scalable cloud network architectures that meet organizational goals.

What is the difference between Aws Networking vs Cloud Network Engineer?

Job description

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on.

We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we're looking for talented people who want to help.
You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers.

And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Key job responsibilities
Collaborate with vendors/manufacturers to develop and evaluate new Fiber Optic solutions and come up with implementation plans for incorporating them into the network
Design and specify structured cabling systems (fiber, copper, cable trays/duct banks) for network layers at hyperscale data centers
Develop standards, reference designs, and installation guidelines for physical network/cabling deployments and structured cabling systems
Focus on ambiguous problem areas in existing or new network architecture and systems development initiatives, propose and deliver projects that have a significant business and/or customer impact
Manage fiber vendors and contractors; perform quality control and commissioning of fiber bundles and structured cabling systems
Perform mitigation analysis and site inspections to validate as-built conditions, ensuring compliance with design and operational requirements
Monitor network/system/link quality and build mechanism to remediate large scale events and improve health of our links
Troubleshoot and resolve issues that are causal to fiber connectivity and fiver plant design
Maintain documentation, drawings, and asset records for physical fiber network components across global sites
A day in the life
On an everyday basis as an engineer or scientist on our team, you have the unique opportunity to understand the growing AWS network and our internal customers' requirement on interconnect solutions, and work backwards to devise fiber connectivity solutions by influencing the broad industry and/or to develop software tools with sister teams to maintain a highly available network that delights AWS customers. You design and implement processes and mechanisms that both help the team to deliver business impact to the organization in a systemic way, while also helping to raise the bar on our operational excellence.
You'll bridge design, construction, and operations, ensuring that every layer of physical networking from fiber trunks to copper patching meets high standards of performance, reliability, and scalability.
About the team
Within AWS Networking, the Network Product Development (NPD) organization is responsible for designing the network fiber connectivity designs and owning the implementation plans that power the global AWS network. Beyond product delivery, we actively manage the fiber infrastructure in a network that grows by 70% annually

This means tracking key business and operational metrics to ensure that we operate smoothly and minimize or eliminate customer impact due to device related issues for a transparent AWS customer experience.
Why AWS
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the world's most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform. We pioneered cloud computing and never stopped innovating - that's why customers from the most successful startups to Global 500 companies trust our robust suite of products and services to power their businesses.
Diverse Experiences
Amazon values diverse experiences. Even if you do not meet all of the preferred qualifications and skills listed in the job description, we encourage candidates to apply

If your career is just starting, hasn't followed a traditional path, or includes alternative experiences, don't let it stop you from applying.
Work/Life Balance
We value work-life harmony. Achieving success at work should never come at the expense of sacrifices at home, which is why we strive for flexibility as part of our working culture. When we feel supported in the workplace and at home, there's nothing we can't achieve in the cloud.
Inclusive Team Culture
Here at AWS, it's in our nature to learn and be curious

Our employee-led affinity groups foster a culture of inclusion that empower us to be proud of our differences. Ongoing events and learning experiences, including our Conversations on Race and Ethnicity (CORE) and AmazeCon (gender diversity) conferences, inspire us to never stop embracing our uniqueness.
Mentorship and Career Growth
We're continuously raising our performance bar as we strive to become Earth's Best Employer. That's why you'll find endless knowledge-sharing, mentorship and other career-advancing resources here to help you develop into a better-rounded professional.
