What is AWS FinOps?

AWS FinOps, short for Financial Operations, is a discipline that combines financial management with cloud operations to help organizations optimize and manage their cloud spending on Amazon Web Services (AWS). It involves practices such as budgeting, forecasting, cost allocation, and continuous monitoring to ensure efficient use of cloud resources. AWS FinOps teams work to promote cost transparency, accountability, and collaboration between finance, engineering, and business teams, enabling organizations to maximize value from their cloud investments.

What are some common challenges faced by AWS FinOps professionals, and how can they be addressed?

AWS FinOps professionals often encounter challenges such as managing unpredictable cloud costs, ensuring accurate resource tagging, and promoting cost-conscious practices across teams. Addressing these challenges involves implementing automated tagging policies, collaborating closely with engineering and finance teams to forecast expenses, and providing regular cost reports and recommendations. Additionally, developing a strong understanding of AWS pricing models and leveraging tools like AWS Cost Explorer and third-party FinOps platforms can help mitigate unexpected spending and drive accountability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AWS FinOps professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AWS FinOps professional, you need expertise in cloud financial management, cost optimization strategies, and a strong understanding of AWS services, typically supported by experience with cloud platforms and financial analysis. Familiarity with tools like AWS Cost Explorer, AWS Budgets, and FinOps reporting platforms, as well as certifications such as AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or FinOps Certified Practitioner, is highly beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills help you bridge gaps between technical and finance teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for controlling cloud costs, driving financial accountability, and maximizing cloud value for organizations.

Job description

Accenture Edge for AWS is seeking a Tech Practice Leader - Migration and Modernization to build and lead the practice serving mid-market companies up to $3B in annual revenue. This leader owns the practice vision, portfolio, technical standards, solution architecture, delivery model, reusable assets, talent strategy, and governance required to assess, migrate, modernize, optimize, and operate customer workloads on AWS with enterprise-grade quality and mid-market speed.

The ideal candidate combines hands-on AWS architecture credibility with migration-factory leadership, application and database modernization expertise, field CTO-style customer engagement, presales solutioning, and delivery governance. This role is accountable for creating repeatable offerings across discovery and assessment, landing zones, VMware and data center migration, application and database modernization, containers, serverless, DevOps, cloud operations, resilience, security, and FinOps.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build and lead the practice: Define the migration and modernization strategy, services portfolio, investment priorities, operating model, delivery capacity, and growth roadmap.

  • Own portfolio and solution quality: Lead offerings across discovery and assessment, migration planning, landing zones, VMware and data center exits, application and database migration, replatforming, refactoring, containers, serverless, DevOps, resilience, security, FinOps, and managed services transition.

  • Own bookings and revenue growth: Carry direct accountability for $50M-$100M in annual practice bookings and revenue, partner with sales leaders and AWS field teams to originate and qualify opportunities, shape value propositions, and convert technical workshops and assessments into migration, modernization, and managed-services pipeline.

  • Lead strategic pursuits: Act as the senior technical and commercial sponsor for priority deals, owning discovery, solution differentiation, estimation, risk, executive presentations, proposal quality, and technical close.

  • Activate AWS co-sell and Marketplace: Create packaged solutions that are easy for AWS sellers to position, support ACE opportunity progression, use applicable funding and incentives, and develop AWS Marketplace-ready offers with clear scope, price, outcomes, and procurement paths.

  • Build market demand: Create account-based campaigns, executive briefings, immersion days, workshops, assessments, and industry-specific sales plays focused on VMware exits, data center migration, application modernization, secure cloud foundations, optimization, and managed services.

  • Establish thought leadership: Develop differentiated points of view on migrate-first strategies, continuous modernization, legacy and VMware transformation, cloud economics, AI-assisted modernization, and operating-model change for mid-market customers.

  • Represent the practice externally: Publish articles and research-backed perspectives; speak at customer, analyst, industry, and AWS events; lead webinars and roundtables; and build relationships with CIO, CTO, CISO, infrastructure, application, and operations leaders.

  • Turn delivery outcomes into growth assets: Capture customer references, case studies, quantified benefits, patterns, and lessons learned to improve credibility, cross-sell, repeatability, and win rates.

  • Serve as senior technical sponsor: Lead executive technology discussions, architecture workshops, modernization roadmaps, and technical decision-making for priority customers and strategic pursuits.

  • Scale migration and modernization factories: Establish repeatable assessment, wave-planning, automation, cutover, testing, validation, and post-migration optimization methods.

  • Ensure delivery readiness: Set clear scope, architecture, staffing, pricing assumptions, acceptance criteria, dependencies, risks, and measurable outcomes before handoff.

  • Develop technical talent: Build capability frameworks, certification paths, communities of practice, and mentoring models for architects, engineers, and delivery leads.

  • Govern quality and risk: Establish architecture reviews, AWS Well-Architected discipline, security-by-design, delivery assurance, escalation, and technical debt management.

  • Improve repeatability: Convert successful programs into packaged offerings, reference architectures, automation, playbooks, templates, and managed-services runbooks.

  • Drive practice performance: Own annual bookings and revenue attainment, and track practice-sourced and influenced pipeline, conversion, win rate, Marketplace activity, utilization, margin, delivery productivity, solution reuse, customer references, thought-leadership reach, certification progress, customer satisfaction, and offering adoption.

Travel may be required for this role. The amount of travel will vary from 25% to 100% depending on business need and client requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 15+ years of experience in cloud architecture, technology consulting, platform engineering, systems integration, or transformation delivery, including 8+ years in hands-on AWS migration, modernization, architecture, engineering, or operations.

  • Minimum 5+ years leading and scaling a migration, modernization, cloud platform, application transformation, or infrastructure practice, including teams of 25-50 architects, engineers, consultants, delivery leads, or managed-services professionals.

  • Proven accountability for $50M-$100M in annual AWS migration, modernization, managed-services, or technology-enabled bookings and revenue, with demonstrated ability to create or influence $100M-$200M in qualified annual pipeline.

  • Experience solutioning, governing, or delivering at least 15 AWS migration or modernization engagements, including senior technical sponsorship for at least 5 strategic customer accounts or transformation programs.

  • Minimum 5+ years expertise in AWS migration and modernization architecture, including landing zones, networking, security, resilience, DevOps, containers, serverless, databases, storage, observability, and FinOps.
