JOB DESCRIPTION – AVID TUTOR


To qualify for this position, applicants must be 18+ years of age and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.

JOB SUMMARY

The position of Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Tutor is one that targets students in the academic middle — B, C, and D students — who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-income or minority families. AVID pulls these students out of any less challenging courses and puts them on the college track: acceleration instead of remediation. 


REPORTS TO/ EVALUATED BY: AVID Coordinator/Teacher or Designee


RESPONSIBILITES

  • Complete mandatory AVID Tutorial Training.
  • Assist students in any subject area by being familiar with students’ textbooks and materials and AVID classroom resources.
  • Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow.
  • Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
  • Monitor student notes and discussions, and determine the concepts that need to be accelerated.
  • Conduct acceleration sessions in all areas of mathematics; therefore, a strong math background is recommended.
  • Conduct mini-lessons in the process of writing in all subject areas, study skills, and other aspects of college preparation.
  • Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, etc.
  • Assist in teaching study skills and other aspects of college preparation.
  • Take responsibility for the tone and atmosphere of the AVID classroom.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must hold a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be 18+ years of age
  • Must have college experience that includes: 
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA. – Official college transcript required  and
  • Current enrollment in college  OR
  • Earned a college degree within the last three years
  • Possess strong Math and English skills 
  • Complete an on-line application
  • Pass the Bremerton School District General Skills Test
  • Pass a background check, including fingerprinting
