Is $15 as a barista good?

For a barista, a $15 hourly wage is generally considered above the national average in many regions and reflects a competitive starting or mid-level pay rate. Factors such as location, experience, and the specific employer can influence whether this rate is considered good, but it typically aligns with industry standards for entry-level to experienced positions. Additional skills like customer service and familiarity with POS systems can also impact pay expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Barista, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Barista, you need a good understanding of coffee preparation, familiarity with food safety standards, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience with espresso machines, grinders, POS systems, and sometimes food handling certifications are typically required. Excellent customer service, teamwork, and multitasking abilities help baristas excel in fast-paced environments. These skills and qualities ensure efficient service, satisfied customers, and smooth café operations.

Job description

WE ARE:
Established NY wholesale bakery with well-loved patisseries/cafes in Park Slope & Industry City. Seeking a full-time barista to work at our shop(s).
Park Slope hosts lots of kids and families--regulars that have supported us since opening our doors in 2006, while our Industry City outpost mainly caters to corporate customers on weekdays, and families on weekends. We take the caliber of our product very seriously and management cares deeply about making sure our staff is well-protected, and that safety protocols are set in place during these times. We try our best to ensure that our cafes are rewarding, fulfilling work environments where the staff takes care of each other and hold themselves to the highest standard.
YOU ARE:
  • A specialty coffee-trained and experienced barista who wants to grow their coffee knowledge loves starting regular orders as they walk through the door, and is utterly unflappable in high-volume rushes.
  • You communicate well in teams, wipe up stray splashes and coffee grinds as soon as you see them, rearrange the pastries on display throughout the day to make them consistently aesthetically presentable, and take great joy in crushing the rush.
  • You're someone naturally outgoing and friendly - as in, you charm even the crankiest customer, before or after caffeine -- as well as responsible, reliable, and trustworthy.
  • We have an excellent staff and pride ourselves on our professionalism. Food handler certification is a must.

DETAILS:
  • $16-$20/hr base wage, plus tips (average tips are $9+/hour).
  • Base pay increase after a positive performance review in 3 months.
  • Weekends a must.

We'd love to find the next folks who will be part of our team for the foreseeable future.
