Av Drafting information

What is AV drafting?

AV drafting refers to the process of creating technical drawings and plans for audiovisual (AV) systems, such as those used in conference rooms, theaters, or public spaces. AV drafters use specialized software like AutoCAD or Revit to produce detailed layouts that show the placement of equipment, wiring, and infrastructure. These drawings help guide the installation and integration of AV components, ensuring that projects meet technical requirements and industry standards. AV drafting is an essential part of the design phase for complex audiovisual projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AV drafter, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AV Drafter, you need a strong background in technical drawing, understanding of audiovisual (AV) systems, and proficiency in drafting standards, typically supported by an associate degree or certification in drafting or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and AV-specific design tools is essential, along with knowledge of industry standards like AVIXA. Attention to detail, strong communication, and collaboration skills help you accurately interpret project requirements and work effectively with engineers and project managers. These skills are crucial for producing precise AV system drawings that ensure successful installations and project outcomes.

What types of projects can an AV drafter expect to work on, and how does this impact their day-to-day responsibilities?

As an AV Drafter, you can expect to work on a variety of projects, including designing audio-visual systems for conference rooms, educational facilities, entertainment venues, and commercial spaces. Your daily tasks will likely involve creating detailed technical drawings using CAD software, updating schematics based on client feedback, and collaborating closely with engineers, project managers, and installers to ensure designs are practical and meet specifications. Because each project has unique requirements, you’ll need to adapt your approach and stay up to date with evolving AV technologies. This variety keeps the role dynamic but also requires strong attention to detail and communication skills.

What is the difference between Av Drafting vs AV Installer?

Industry UsageUsed in AV design firms, architecture, and engineering companiesCommon in AV installation companies and service providers
Search/Comparison IntentDesign, planning, and technical drafting of AV systemsPhysical installation and setup of AV equipment

Av Drafting focuses on creating detailed plans and technical drawings for AV systems using CAD software, often working in an office environment. In contrast, AV Installers physically set up and install AV equipment on-site, ensuring systems function correctly. Both roles are essential in the AV industry but differ in their responsibilities, work environment, and required skills.

Job description

Ovadia Interior Design and Architecture is a nationally recognized interior design and architecture studio in the heart of Manhattan, where modern elegance, warmth, and a sense of play come together in everything we create. We craft fully customized interiors for high-end homes, luxury apartments, and ambitious development and commercial projects, and we genuinely love both the work and the people we do it with.
We are looking for an experienced interior architect to join us as our Drafter Job Captain, leading the drawing effort across our architecture and interior design projects. This is a role for someone who takes pride in a clean, coordinated, well-annotated set, who catches the conflict before it reaches the field, and who enjoys bringing a team along with them. You will oversee a group of drafters, both here in the studio and working remotely, and you will be the person the firm trusts to keep documentation accurate, consistent, and on schedule.
Position Overview
The Drafter Job Captain (DJC) is an experienced interior architect who owns construction and design documentation across our architectural and interior projects, and who supervises the drafting team producing it. You will set drawing priorities, assign and review work for several drafters both in the studio and remote, and hold the standard for every set that leaves the office. You will also draft and detail directly on the more complex packages, coordinate with designers, project managers, consultants, and contractors, and keep every revision tracked and issued cleanly. Because part of the team works remotely, clear written direction, dependable follow-up, and comfort running drawing reviews over video call will be essential.
What You Will Be Doing
Drawing Production and Documentation
  • Produce and oversee accurate plans, elevations, sections, reflected ceiling plans, and details in AutoCAD.
  • Develop custom millwork, casework, and finish detail drawings in coordination with the design team and fabricators.
  • Build and review SketchUp models used for design study, client presentation, and dimensional verification.
  • Prepare and issue drawing sets at each phase, including schematic design, design development, construction documents, and revisions.

Leading the Drafting Team
  • Supervise a team of drafters in the studio and working remotely, assigning work and setting clear priorities and deadlines.
  • Review and redline the team's drawings, and give feedback that raises the quality of the next set.
  • Run regular check-ins and drawing reviews, including over video call with remote team members.
  • Serve as job captain on assigned projects, owning the completeness, accuracy, and consistency of the set.
  • Onboard and train new drafters on firm standards, templates, and detail libraries.
  • Balance workload across the team, and flag capacity and schedule risks to project managers early.

Coordination and Field Support
  • Coordinate drawings with architects, designers, and project managers so documentation matches current design intent.
  • Incorporate structural, MEP, lighting, and AV information into the set, and resolve conflicts before issue.
  • Conduct field measurements and site surveys, and translate existing conditions into accurate base drawings.
  • Respond to contractor RFIs and issue sketch clarifications during construction administration.
  • Review shop drawings and submittals against the documented design and note discrepancies.

Standards and Quality Control
  • Apply and help maintain firm CAD standards, title blocks, layer conventions, and detail libraries.
  • Perform quality checks before issue, including dimension strings, tags, schedules, and general note accuracy.
  • Keep drawings aligned with applicable building code, accessibility, and NYC filing requirements.
  • Contribute to improving templates and typical details so every project starts further ahead.

What We Are Looking For
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in interior architecture, architecture, or interior design
  • 6 to 10 years of experience in an interior architecture or architecture studio, with a strong construction documentation background
  • Experience supervising drafters or leading a drawing team, including remote team members
  • Expert level AutoCAD skills, including layer management, xrefs, blocks, and sheet set organization
  • Proficiency in SketchUp for modeling and dimensional study
  • Proven track record producing complete construction document sets from start through issue
  • Working knowledge of building codes, accessibility requirements, and construction detailing
  • Experience coordinating consultant drawings and resolving conflicts across disciplines
  • Clear written and verbal communication, and the follow-through to keep a distributed team aligned

Preferred
  • Experience with high-end residential work and custom millwork documentation
  • Familiarity with NYC DOB filing processes, Bluebeam markup, and Revit

What We Offer
  • Base salary range of $85,000 to $100,000, commensurate with experience
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage (75% company-paid)
  • 401(k) plan
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Summer Fridays
  • Team-building events and a strong company culture
