What is autonomous driving?

Autonomous driving refers to the use of technology to enable vehicles to navigate and operate without direct human input. These vehicles use a combination of sensors, cameras, radar, and artificial intelligence to perceive their environment and make driving decisions. The goal is to improve road safety, reduce human error, and increase transportation efficiency. Autonomous driving systems are typically categorized by levels, ranging from driver assistance to fully self-driving vehicles. This field is rapidly evolving, with ongoing research and real-world testing by automotive and technology companies.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in autonomous driving roles?

Professionals in autonomous driving often encounter challenges such as integrating complex sensor data, ensuring the reliability of AI algorithms in unpredictable environments, and meeting strict safety and regulatory standards. Collaboration is key, as teams typically work cross-functionally with hardware, software, and quality assurance groups to solve technical issues and validate system performance. Adapting to rapidly evolving technology and maintaining clear communication across disciplines are essential for success in this dynamic field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an autonomous driving engineer role, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Autonomous Driving Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, robotics, and engineering, often demonstrated by a relevant degree and experience in machine learning or computer vision. Proficiency with programming languages such as Python and C++, as well as familiarity with simulation tools, ROS (Robot Operating System), and sensor integration (e.g., LiDAR, radar), is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration skills, and adaptability help you effectively tackle complex technical challenges and work within multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure the development of safe, reliable, and innovative autonomous vehicle systems that meet rigorous industry standards.

What is the difference between Autonomous Driving vs Autonomous Vehicle Software Engineer?

Get behind the wheel of the future.
Avride is hiring Autonomous Vehicle Operators in Dallas to help operate our robotaxis on real roads with real passengers.
You'll experience autonomous driving technology firsthand while helping our team improve how these vehicles navigate the world around them.
No AV background? No problem. We can teach you our systems if you have basic tech skills. What we're looking for is something harder to teach: excellent driving habits, strong awareness, good judgment, and a commitment to safety.
If you're an experienced driver who wants to do something different, come drive with us.
What You'll Do:
  • Operate autonomous vehicles safely and lawfully to collect critical data on system performance and environmental factors.
  • Interact professionally with riders, engineers, and company operations leaders to provide feedback and insights.
  • Monitor vehicle performance and conduct in-field testing to ensure operational safety.
  • Prepare vehicles daily for in-field operations, including safety checks and system readiness.
  • Submit detailed reports to support system advancements and operational improvements.
  • Be prepared for the actions of other drivers and pedestrians as well as for unexpected events.
  • Be alert and distraction free while in vehicles.

What You Need:
  • Experience as a professional driver, driving instructor, AV operator, motorsports racer, or in another role built around a serious commitment to safety
  • A valid US driving license for the last 3+ years
  • A clean driving record with no DUIs, drug, and/or alcohol-related offenses within the last 5 years
  • The instincts to spot a hazardous situation early and react quickly and safely, even when others make mistakes around you
  • Solid working knowledge of local traffic laws and regulations
  • Excellent communication skills and a strong attention to detail
  • A willingness to work in various weather conditions and comfortable driving on different types of roads
  • A genuine sense of ownership and responsibility behind the wheel

Nice to Have:
  • Knowledge of vehicle technology and control systems
  • A defensive driving or safe driving certification
  • Additional courses in Safety Driving or Defensive Driving

Benefits:
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Employer Subsidized Healthcare Benefits thru our 3rd party employer of record partner
  • Flexible Spending Account for healthcare-related costs
  • Short and long-term disability and life insurance thru our 3rd party employer of record partner
  • 401(k) package

Ready to help drive the future of transportation? Apply today - we'd love to have you on the team.
Commitment: This is a full-time, ongoing contract position staffed through our trusted Employer of Record partner, who manages payroll, benefits, and local compliance on our behalf. You will work day-to-day with the Avride team and be fully integrated into our culture and operations. This job is onsite and available to candidates local to the Dallas, Texas area.
