What is an automotive trimmer?

Automotive Trimmers are skilled professionals who specialize in the repair, modification, and installation of vehicle interiors. This includes working on seats, upholstery, carpets, headliners, and interior panels using various materials like fabric, leather, and vinyl. Automotive Trimmers are responsible for restoring classic vehicles, customizing interiors, and ensuring comfort and aesthetics inside cars. Their work often involves both handcrafting and the use of specialized tools to achieve high-quality finishes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automotive trimmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automotive Trimmer, you need expertise in upholstery techniques, pattern-making, and material selection, often supported by vocational training or an apprenticeship. Familiarity with industrial sewing machines, hand tools, and sometimes CAD software for template design is commonly required. Attention to detail, excellent hand-eye coordination, and strong problem-solving skills set outstanding trimmers apart. These abilities ensure precise, high-quality finishes that meet client expectations and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by automotive trimmers, and how can they be managed?

Automotive Trimmers often face challenges such as working with a diverse range of materials—like leather, vinyl, and fabric—which require different tools and techniques. Precision is crucial, as even small mistakes can affect the fit and finish of vehicle interiors. Time management is also important, since projects may have tight deadlines, especially in a busy repair or restoration shop. To manage these challenges, Automotive Trimmers benefit from ongoing skills training, effective communication with team members, and careful planning before starting each project.

Automotive Trimmer / Interior CraftsmanSaltWorks MFG – Sarasota, FL
Some people want a job.
Some people want to build something special.
At SaltWorks, we are looking for craftsmen who care deeply about what they create. People who notice the details. People who understand that the fit of a panel, the pull of a stitch, the shape of a seat, and the feel of an interior all matter.
We build high-end custom vehicles in-house from the ground up — fabrication, body, paint, mechanical, engineering, trim, machining, and final assembly all under one roof. Every build is different. Every build is personal.
This is not production work.
This is not assembly line work.
This is coachbuilding-level craftsmanship.
We are searching for an experienced Automotive Trimmer / Interior Craftsman who wants to be part of a passionate team building some of the finest custom vehicles in the country.
What You’ll Be Doing
  • Full custom automotive interiors
  • Seat fabrication, foam shaping, and upholstery
  • Door panels, consoles, dashes, headliners, carpet, and trunk work
  • Pattern making and template creation
  • Leather, vinyl, suede, and specialty material work
  • Interior assembly and final fit/finish
  • Collaborating with fabrication and mechanical departments
  • Solving custom one-off challenges with creativity and craftsmanship

We care about:
  • Pride in your work
  • Attention to detail
  • Passion for craftsmanship
  • Positive attitude
  • Team mentality
  • Willingness to improve and push yourself
  • Caring about the final product as much as the customer does
We want people who walk around the car one more time before calling it done.
Bonus Skills
  • Custom seat fabrication
  • CNC sewn panel understanding
  • Embroidery experience
  • Marine or aircraft upholstery background
  • Design/material selection input
What You’ll Find Here
  • High-end custom projects
  • Passionate craftsmen
  • Modern equipment and clean facility
  • In-house engineering and fabrication support
  • Opportunity to grow with a rapidly evolving company
  • A culture that values quality over shortcuts
  • A team pushing to raise the standard every day
SaltWorks Core Principles
  • Do it Right
  • Customer First
  • Quality is Job 1
  • Cleanliness

  • Teamwork
If you want to simply clock in and out, this probably isn’t the place.
But if you want to build vehicles that people remember…
if you want to work around others who genuinely care…
and if you take pride in craftsmanship and creating something exceptional…
We would love to talk with you.
