POSITION: Automotive Studio Engineer

JOB DESCRIPTION: An Automotive Studio Engineer acts as the crucial technical bridge between creative design teams and production engineering, ensuring vehicle concepts are both aesthetically striking and physically manufacturable. They translate styling sketches into feasible CAD models (CATIA V5/3DX), manage package constraints, and oversee physical prototype development.

LOCATION: Auburn Hills, MI

JOB TYPE: Full-Time

Job Summary:

  • Design Feasibility: Review and optimize design concepts for manufacturing, assembly, and safety standards (e.g., FMVSS).
  • CAD Modeling: Create, refine, and manage 3D CAD data, working closely with clay modelers and designers to ensure surfaces meet engineering requirements.
  • Cross-functional Liaison: Communicate with designers, engineering teams, and tool suppliers to balance design intent with production feasibility.
  • Package and Layout: Define and manage vehicle package constraints, including Body and Trim.
  • Technical Reviews: Lead technical reviews to reconcile theme vision with engineering assumptions.
  • Strong technical understanding of automotive Body-in-White systems, including design, development, and release processes.
  • Understanding of automotive vehicle systems and their packaging requirements.
  • Surface optimization and understanding of design aesthetics.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills to manage conflict between aesthetics and functionality.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced styling studio environment.
  • Develop part designs from master sections and design surfaces for Body Structure components.
  • Relevant experience and understanding of component manufacturing processes like sheet metal forming, roll forming, casting, and modern joining technologies.
  • Understanding of manufacturing feasibility/ design for manufacturing & assembly.
  • Create and develop designs that are optimized for performance, weight, durability, and cost.
  • Develop a testing plan to prove out design concepts and conduct physical testing to confirm the design meets performance targets.
  • Vehicle launch experience.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Software: Proficiency in CAD tools, particularly CATIA V5 or 3DX.
  • Experience: 3+ years of experience in vehicle packaging, layout, or design engineering.
  • Manufacturing Knowledge: Strong understanding of automotive production processes and material limitations.
