Automotive Software Engineer Remote information

What does an automotive software engineer do when working remotely?

An Automotive Software Engineer working remotely designs, develops, tests, and maintains software systems used in vehicles, such as infotainment systems, ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems), and vehicle control units. They typically collaborate virtually with other engineers and stakeholders to ensure software quality and compliance with automotive standards. Remote engineers use tools for code versioning, debugging, and testing, and may need to simulate vehicle environments on their local machines or connect to remote testing hardware. Effective communication and self-management are crucial for success in this remote role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automotive software engineer remote?

To thrive as an Automotive Software Engineer (Remote), you need a solid background in computer science, embedded systems, and automotive protocols, typically backed by a relevant degree and experience in automotive software development. Familiarity with programming languages like C/C++, AUTOSAR, CAN, and tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, as well as knowledge of software development life cycles and industry standards (e.g., ISO 26262), is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for remote teamwork and complex project delivery. These skills ensure the delivery of reliable, safe, and innovative automotive software solutions in a distributed work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote automotive software engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Automotive Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as collaborating across different time zones, maintaining clear communication with hardware teams, and ensuring secure access to proprietary vehicle systems. To address these, companies typically use robust project management tools, schedule regular video meetings, and implement secure remote development environments. Building strong documentation habits and proactive communication also help ensure alignment with cross-functional teams, making remote work both productive and rewarding.

Software Product Manager - Internal Efficiency ART (m/f/d)

Advantest

Hall Summit, LA • On-site, Remote

Full-time

Re-posted 11 days ago

Job description

Advantest is a global leader in automatic test equipment for the semiconductor industry. Our V93000 platform is used to test the majority of the world's most advanced semiconductor devices.
We are looking for a Software Product Manager for the Internal Efficiency ART to define and drive software solutions that measurably improve internal engineering productivity, development efficiency, and software quality across 93K SW R&D.
In this role, you own the content direction of the Agile Release Train, translating organizational needs into a clear product strategy, roadmap, and prioritized backlog. A key focus of the ART is to establish the foundation for an AI-native software engineering organization. This includes defining and building shared AI platforms, services, and infrastructure that enable teams to integrate AI into their daily engineering workflows. The ART promotes AI-native engineering, enables teams to use AI securely, and transforms software development for better productivity, quality, and delivery.
You work closely with engineering leaders, development teams, and stakeholders within 93K SW R&D to improve efficiency across the entire software development lifecycle (SDLC).
This is a senior, handson product role in a largescale software organization, located onsite in Boeblingen (partial remote work possible).
What you will do

  • Own the product vision, roadmap, and backlog for the Internal Efficiency ART.
  • Drive the organization's transition towards AI-native software engineering by defining and prioritizing high-impact initiatives that improve engineering productivity, software quality, and development efficiency.
  • Define and evolve shared AI and automation platforms, infrastructure, and services that enable teams to leverage AI and automation securely and efficiently.
  • Partner with engineering teams, Product Owners, and Business Owners to accelerate AI adoption and drive measurable improvements in engineering efficiency.
  • Define and structure EPICs and features across distributed teams and Product Owners.
  • Promote reuse, standardization, and alignment across locations and Business Units.
  • Establish meaningful metrics to measure adoption, productivity improvements, and business impact.
  • Work closely with the Release Train Engineer to ensure effective execution while maintaining ownership of product strategy and priorities.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong technical background in software engineering, software architecture, and modern software development practices.
  • Proven experience as Product Manager, Product Owner, Program Manager, or Project Manager for large-scale software solutions.
  • Strong understanding of AI technologies, large language models, AI agents, and their application to software engineering and engineering productivity.
  • Strong understanding of software development processes, CI/CD, development tooling, automation, and engineering analytics.
  • Ability to define strategy, prioritize effectively, and balance competing business demands.
  • Experience driving technology adoption, organizational change, or engineering transformation initiatives in large software organizations.
  • Strong communication, coaching, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Very good English skills and willingness to travel internationally (approx. twice a year).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with large (>500 engineers) distributed software projects with strong HW/SW interaction.
  • Experience in scaled agile environments (e.g. SAFe).
  • In depth knowledge of Advantest products and solutions (93K, T2K, SLT, ASV, Memory, ...)
  • Background in regulated industries (automotive, medical, aerospace).
  • German, Japanese, and/or Chinese language skills.
