How much do automotive engineering technology jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 12, 2026, the average hourly pay for automotive engineering technology in the United States is $26.36, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.19 and $28.85 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What do automotive engineering technicians do?

Automotive engineering technicians assist in designing, testing, and manufacturing vehicle components and systems. They use tools like computer-aided design (CAD) software and perform inspections, diagnostics, and repairs to ensure vehicle performance and safety. These technicians often work in laboratories or manufacturing environments and may require certifications such as ASE to perform specialized tasks.

What is Automotive Engineering Technology?

Automotive Engineering Technology is a field focused on the application of engineering principles and technical skills to the design, development, testing, and maintenance of vehicles and their systems. Professionals in this area work on improving vehicle performance, safety, and efficiency, often bridging the gap between engineering theory and practical application. They may be involved in areas such as manufacturing processes, quality control, diagnostics, and the integration of new automotive technologies like electric and autonomous vehicles.

What can you do with an automotive engineering technology degree?

An automotive engineering technology degree prepares individuals for roles such as automotive technician, service manager, quality control inspector, or design technician. Graduates often work in vehicle design, testing, manufacturing, or maintenance, utilizing skills in diagnostics, computer-aided design (CAD), and industry standards. Certifications like ASE can enhance job prospects in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Automotive Engineering Technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automotive Engineering Technologist, you need a solid grounding in mechanical engineering principles, automotive systems, and typically a degree in automotive engineering technology or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, diagnostic tools, and automotive testing equipment is essential, and certifications such as ASE can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication skills help professionals excel in problem-solving and collaborating on complex projects. These competencies ensure high-quality vehicle design, troubleshooting, and innovation in a rapidly evolving automotive industry.

What jobs are in automotive technology?

Jobs in automotive technology include automotive service technicians and mechanics, who diagnose and repair vehicle issues using specialized tools and diagnostic equipment. Other roles include automotive engineers, quality control inspectors, parts specialists, and service advisors, all requiring knowledge of vehicle systems and often certifications like ASE. These positions typically involve working in repair shops, dealerships, or manufacturing environments.

What are some typical projects or tasks that Automotive Engineering Technologists work on within a team setting?

Automotive Engineering Technologists often collaborate with engineers and designers on projects such as developing new vehicle components, improving manufacturing processes, or troubleshooting mechanical issues. They may assist in prototyping, testing, and analyzing vehicle systems, as well as preparing technical documentation. Working closely with cross-functional teams, they contribute their hands-on expertise to ensure that designs are practical, manufacturable, and meet safety standards.

What engineers make $500,000 a year?

In the field of automotive engineering technology, very few engineers earn $500,000 annually. Typically, such high salaries are associated with executive roles, specialized consulting, or senior management positions rather than entry-level or standard engineering roles. Advanced experience, leadership, and industry demand are key factors for top-tier compensation in engineering fields.

What is the difference between Automotive Engineering Technology vs Automotive Engineering?

AspectAutomotive Engineering TechnologyAutomotive Engineering
EducationAssociate's or Bachelor's in Automotive Technology or Engineering TechnologyBachelor's or Master's in Automotive Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
FocusPractical application, diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of vehiclesTheoretical design, development, and testing of automotive systems
Work EnvironmentAuto repair shops, manufacturing plants, testing labsDesign labs, R&D departments, manufacturing facilities
CertificationsASE certifications, manufacturer-specific certificationsProfessional engineering licenses (PE), specialized automotive design certifications

Automotive Engineering Technology focuses on hands-on skills, diagnostics, and vehicle maintenance, while Automotive Engineering emphasizes vehicle design, development, and innovation. Both roles share foundational knowledge but serve different career paths within the automotive industry.
