This position is responsible for performing skilled repair work and servicing a variety of City automobiles, trucks and equipment. Must obtain CDL within 6 months of employment.

Major Duties
• Performs skilled automotive mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and auxiliary equipment with electronic components including vans with lifts, passenger buses, dump trucks, sweepers, automobiles and pickup trucks;
• Repairs and overhauls mechanical components on buses, automobiles, specialized and multi-purpose trucks, and other departmental equipment;
• Inspects, tests, adjusts, repairs, and replaces complete or integral parts of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, etc;
• Tests, repairs, or rebuilds diesel engines and components, including injectors;
• Diagnoses malfunctions and adjusts engine, fuel, electrical, and mechanical system to specifications including electronic fuel injection systems and electronically controlled transmissions;
• Replaces and/or repairs parts to engines such as installing new fuel injectors, rods, new rings, bearings; aligns rods, grinds valves; grinds tappets, generators, starters, transmissions, differentials, drive lines, rear ends, radiators, air brake systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems oil and air filters, fuel filters, air pumps, water pumps, and fuel pumps;
• Tunes engines by installing new points and condenser; cleans and regaps spark plugs and puts in new plugs; sets carburetor or installs new or rebuilt carburetor, and adjusts tappets to correct clearance;
• May train employees;
• Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent; three (3) to five (5) years of automotive mechanic experience; Vocational coursework in a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge Required by the Position
• Knowledge of the principles governing the operation and maintenance of internal combustion engines;
• Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and technology used in the repair and maintenance of automotive and related equipment;
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the automotive repair trade;
• Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials of the mechanical trade;
• Skill in repairing defects in a wide variety of automotive equipment;
• Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical and electronic failures;
• Ability to adapt successfully to the wide range of equipment repaired in the shop;
• Ability to safely operate gas and arc welding equipment to fabricate parts or mounting equipment;
• Ability to learn new technology and terminology of modern automotive equipment;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers and other City employees;
• Ability to obtain Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within six (6) months of employment.
Supervisory Controls: The Purchasing Director assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks work in progress and reviews completed work for the nature and propriety of the final results.
Guidelines: Guidelines include City codes, departmental and safety policies and procedures, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
Complexity: This position consists of a variety of tasks, including repair and preventative maintenance on a variety of automobiles and equipment.
Scope and Effect: This position ensures the safe, effective and efficient operation of City Fleet.
Personal Contacts: Contact is typically with other crew members.
Purpose of Contacts: Contacts are for information sharing and work coordination.
Physical Demands: The work is typically performed with the employee intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, and use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
Work Environment: Most repair work is completed in a shop; on occasion, equipment repairs are made in the field which may involve hazardous conditions. The work involves considerable physical activity with exposure to safety hazards normally associated with general vehicle and equipment repair.
