What is automation and what does an automation professional do?

Automation refers to the use of technology to perform tasks with minimal human intervention. Automation professionals design, develop, and maintain systems that automate processes in various industries, such as manufacturing, IT, and business operations. Their work often involves programming, configuring control systems, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring systems operate efficiently and safely. The goal is to improve productivity, reduce errors, and lower operational costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an automation engineer role?

To thrive as an Automation Engineer, you need a strong foundation in programming, process control, and systems integration, often supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with automation tools like PLCs, SCADA systems, and scripting languages, as well as certifications such as ISA or Siemens, is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and troubleshooting complex systems. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing efficient automated processes, minimizing errors, and ensuring operational reliability.

What is the job outlook for careers in the automation industry?

Automation is a fast-growing field, and demand for people with advanced qualifications is high. Jobs in automation primarily fall into three categories: designing and building automated machines, maintaining these machines, and programming automation software. Many jobs in this field require a significant amount of industrial engineering or robotics experience. Fulfilling job responsibilities in this industry often requires engineering, math, and communication skills as well as familiarity with programming. Someone in this field may also need to be familiar with electrical systems, delivery pipelines, configuration management tools, networking, or databases to get a job in this industry.

What are some common challenges faced by automation professionals when integrating new technologies into existing systems?

Automation professionals often encounter challenges such as compatibility issues between legacy systems and new automation tools, ensuring minimal downtime during transitions, and maintaining data integrity. Additionally, coordinating with IT and operations teams is crucial to address security concerns and user training needs. Being proactive in communication and thorough in planning helps to streamline integration and minimize disruptions.

VC Automation | West Sacramento, CA | Full-Time

About Us

VC Automation is a turn-key system integrator helping companies develop automated solutions that enhance their production capabilities. As part of our high-paced, solutions-driven team, you'll get exposure to unique robotic and automation applications across a wide range of industries—no two projects are the same.

The Role

We're looking for an Automation Engineer I to join our growing team. This is a great opportunity for someone early in their automation career who wants hands-on experience across the full lifecycle of a robotic system—from cell design and simulation through commissioning and field support. You'll work closely with our controls engineers, assembly technicians, and customers to bring automated solutions to life.

What You'll Do
  • Program robots (Yaskawa, Kawasaki, KUKA, ABB, or Fanuc preferred)
  • Generate robot cell layouts, reach checks, and simulations using OEM-specific software
  • Collaborate with controls engineers, assembly, and customer teams during system commissioning
  • Engineer custom tooling and solutions tailored to diverse end-user industries
  • Support light fabrication and assembly duties as needed
  • Provide on-site customer support post-integration, plus intermittent service calls
What You Bring

Required:

  • Associate's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience considered in lieu of degree)
  • 2–3 years of relevant professional experience preferred; strong educational/project experience will also be considered
  • Entry-level PLC experience (Allen-Bradley)
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks
  • Mechanically inclined, with comfort in fabrication practices and tooling adjustments
  • Ability to troubleshoot robots at both the electrical and programming level
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to lift 45+ lbs unassisted

Preferred:

  • Hands-on experience with one or more major robot brands (Yaskawa, Kawasaki, KUKA, ABB, Fanuc)

Schedule & Travel
  • Office hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM
  • Hybrid role with travel required for installations, customer visits, and service calls (~40%)
  • Travel primarily within California, with occasional variation
  • Some work in loud, active customer/manufacturing environments
Compensation

$78,000–$92,000/year, depending on experience

Why VC Automation

Join a team where you'll see your work in action across diverse industries, gain broad exposure to leading robot platforms, and grow your career in a fast-paced, solutions-first environment.
