What is automation and what does an automation professional do?

Automation refers to the use of technology to perform tasks with minimal human intervention. Automation professionals design, develop, and maintain systems that automate processes in various industries, such as manufacturing, IT, and business operations. Their work often involves programming, configuring control systems, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring systems operate efficiently and safely. The goal is to improve productivity, reduce errors, and lower operational costs.

What is the job outlook for careers in the automation industry?

Automation is a fast-growing field, and demand for people with advanced qualifications is high. Jobs in automation primarily fall into three categories: designing and building automated machines, maintaining these machines, and programming automation software. Many jobs in this field require a significant amount of industrial engineering or robotics experience. Fulfilling job responsibilities in this industry often requires engineering, math, and communication skills as well as familiarity with programming. Someone in this field may also need to be familiar with electrical systems, delivery pipelines, configuration management tools, networking, or databases to get a job in this industry.

What are some common challenges faced by automation professionals when integrating new technologies into existing systems?

Automation professionals often encounter challenges such as compatibility issues between legacy systems and new automation tools, ensuring minimal downtime during transitions, and maintaining data integrity. Additionally, coordinating with IT and operations teams is crucial to address security concerns and user training needs. Being proactive in communication and thorough in planning helps to streamline integration and minimize disruptions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an automation engineer role?

To thrive as an Automation Engineer, you need a strong foundation in programming, process control, and systems integration, often supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. About the Role

We are seeking a hands-on QA Automation Engineer responsible for ensuring the quality, reliability, and performance of our software throughout the development lifecycle.

The ideal candidate will work closely with Product, Development, and Business teams to understand requirements, identify risks, define acceptance criteria, and develop effective testing strategies. This role will focus heavily on automation across web applications, APIs, integrations, databases, and end-to-end workflows.

What You’ll Do

  • Participate in requirements gathering and refinement to identify gaps, risks, dependencies, and edge cases.
  • Define test scenarios and acceptance criteria with Product and Development teams.
  • Develop and maintain automated test frameworks using Playwright and/or Cypress.
  • Build UI, regression, smoke, functional, and end-to-end automated tests.
  • Develop automated API tests and validate REST services, JSON payloads, authentication, authorization, and business rules.
  • Perform integration testing across APIs, databases, third-party services, and application components.
  • Validate backend data and business logic using SQL.
  • Develop and execute performance and load tests using k6.
  • Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and support automated quality gates.
  • Perform manual and exploratory testing where automation is not appropriate.
  • Investigate test failures, identify root causes, and collaborate with developers to resolve defects.
  • Maintain reliable, reusable, and scalable automation frameworks.
  • Track defects and testing activities using Jira or similar tools.
  • Monitor QA metrics including automation coverage, defect trends, test results, and release readiness.
  • Participate in release planning and provide QA risk assessments.
  • Continuously improve testing processes, automation coverage, and overall product quality.

What You Bring

Required

  • 3+ years of experience in QA, Quality Engineering, or Test Automation.
  • Strong hands-on automation experience with Playwright and/or Cypress.
  • Experience with API testing and REST services.
  • Experience with k6 or similar performance-testing tools.
  • Working knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript or another programming language.
  • Experience with functional, regression, integration, API, and end-to-end testing.
  • Experience with SQL and database validation.
  • Understanding of CI/CD and Git.
  • Experience working in Agile development environments.
  • Experience with Jira or similar test/defect management tools.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
  • Experience with Kubernetes-deployed applications (EKS preferred)
  • DynamoDB or similar NoSQL operational experience
  • Kafka consumer/producer development experience
  • Experience designing and building AI-powered applications, agents, and workflows using LLMs or other generative AI technologies.
  • Healthcare or compliance-adjacent environment experience (HITRUST, SOC 2, HIPAA)
  • Experience with event-driven architectures or serverless patterns
  • Familiarity with Terraform for application-layer infrastructure

Preferred

  • Experience with both Playwright and Cypress.
  • Strong k6 performance-testing experience.
  • Experience with Postman.
  • Experience with GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, or similar tools.
  • Experience with BDD/Gherkin, accessibility, or security testing.

What We Offer
