Automation Testing Engineers focus on creating automated tests to increase efficiency, while Manual Testers execute test cases manually to identify issues. Both roles are essential in quality assurance, often working together to ensure comprehensive testing coverage.

What are some common challenges automation testing engineers face when integrating automated tests into existing manual testing processes?

Automation Testing Engineers often encounter challenges such as identifying which test cases are best suited for automation and ensuring that automated tests remain maintainable as applications evolve. Integrating automated tests into established manual testing workflows can also require close collaboration with manual testers to align on test coverage and avoid duplication. Additionally, setting up the necessary test environments and managing test data can present hurdles, but effective communication and a phased approach to automation can help ease the transition.

What does an automation testing engineer do?

An Automation Testing Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and executing automated tests to ensure the quality and functionality of software applications. They use specialized tools and scripts to automate repetitive testing tasks, allowing for faster and more reliable test results. Their role often involves collaborating with developers and quality assurance teams to identify test scenarios, maintain test frameworks, and report bugs or issues. Automation Testing Engineers help improve software efficiency, reduce manual testing effort, and accelerate the software development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automation testing engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automation Testing Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Java, Python, or C#), expertise in software testing methodologies, and a solid understanding of the software development lifecycle, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with automation tools such as Selenium, JUnit, TestNG, or Jenkins, and familiarity with continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) systems are typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the creation of robust automated test suites, early detection of defects, and smooth collaboration with development teams, all of which are critical for delivering high-quality software efficiently.

Job description

Company Summary

EchoStar is reimagining the future of connectivity. Our business reach spans satellite television service, live-streaming and on-demand programming, smart home installation services, mobile plans and products.
Today, our brands include Boost Mobile, DISH TV, Gen Mobile, Hughes and Sling TV.

Our DISH Technology team challenges the status quo and reimagines capabilities across industries. Whether through research and development, technology innovation or solution engineering, our team members play vital roles in connecting consumers with the products and platforms of tomorrow.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates must be willing to participate in at least one in-person interview, which may include a live whiteboarding or technical assessment session.

The Lead Automation Engineer resolves network, device, and test framework bottlenecks across Dish Commercial OnStream lab operations and Video/OTT platforms. This role stabilizes multi-client testing environments across Sling, Dish, and Dany by architecting robust automation frameworks, triaging complex production defects, and establishing strict lab governance. Through strategic CI/CD integration, advanced field-level network emulation and AI tool adoption, the role streamlines release readiness and eliminates manual QA overhead. Ultimately, this position bridges lab operations with engineering stakeholders to ensure high-capacity, reliable release cycles.

What Success Looks Like (Objectives)
  • Architect and scale Python-based automation frameworks with integrated CI/CD pipelines to enable continuous regression testing across video and OTT applications

  • Establish lab network governance, device allocation schedules, and safety policies to eliminate resource contention and optimize multi-team usability

  • Network Emulation & Control: Deploy field-level network emulation techniques—including bandwidth throttling, latency injection, packet loss simulation, and real-time network monitoring and controlling—to recreate complex commercial site environments (e.g., hotels, MDUs, hospitals) directly within the lab.
  • Drive release readiness by managing test activities, triaging complex field issues, and analyzing test execution trends to minimize flaky tests

  • Leverage AI-driven testing tools and virtualization methodologies to automate repetitive lab maintenance tasks, power cycling, and test case execution

  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders and external vendors to deliver concise status communications, capacity metrics, and a long-term automation roadmap

Skills, Experience and RequirementsCore Skills and Competencies (What you'll bring)
  • Expertise in architecting scalable UI, API, and embedded automation frameworks from scratch using Python and modern CI/CD tools

  • Domain expertise in live TV and streaming delivery protocols, including IPTV, OTT, QAM, multicast, and HLS/DASH streaming architectures

  • Comprehensive network literacy encompassing VLAN management, Wi-Fi configuration, firewall rules, DHCP reservations, packet analysis, network bandwidth throttling, field-level network emulation techniques, and network monitoring/controlling techniques.
  • Technical leadership capabilities in team management, vendor relations, stakeholder communication, and release execution for complex engineering environments

  • Practical AI application skills to evaluate, integrate, and optimize AI/ML testing tools and automated infrastructure processes

Additional Qualifications
  • Experience with DISH/EchoStar product ecosystems and embedded device lab setups

  • Proven track record in production support testing and complex field issue replication

Minimum Requirements
  • Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science Engineering, or a closely related field

  • Minimum Experience: 8+ years of experience in Software Test Automation(preferably Video domain), including 6+ years in a technical lead or senior engineering role

  • Required Technical Skills: Must have experience with:

    • Python-based test automation frameworks and modern CI/CD orchestration tools (Jenkins, GitLab CI, or GitHub Actions)

    • Live TV delivery ecosystems (IPTV, OTT, QAM, multicast, HLS/DASH streaming)

    • Embedded device log analysis and network configuration (ADB, Wireshark, VLANs, Wi-Fi routers)
