Job description

Job Title
R&D Automation and Test Engineer
Job Description
We are seeking an engineer to support the development, integration, testing, and deployment of automated and software-enabled systems operating in real-world environments. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer who enjoys understanding how hardware, software, controls, and operational workflows come together at the system level.
The engineer will help configure and validate system behavior, support testing in bench, simulation, emulation, and field environments, troubleshoot issues across interfaces and subsystems, and contribute to documentation that improves repeatability and long-term maintainability. This role works closely with cross-functional and international teams including engineering, software development, operations, support, and system integration to help ensure systems are reliable, safe, and ready for operational use.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support the integration, configuration, and commissioning of automated systems and connected subsystems across development, test, and operational environments.

  • Assist with system validation through structured testing, including bench testing, simulation/emulation, and field verification where applicable.

  • Execute test procedures, document results, and help identify defects, edge cases, and improvement opportunities.

  • Troubleshoot system issues using logs, alarms, telemetry, configuration changes, and interface behavior to isolate root causes and support resolution.

  • Help define, validate, and maintain interfaces between software, controls, devices, and external systems.

  • Contribute to system readiness by improving configuration control, test repeatability, change tracking, and regression coverage.

  • Support the creation and maintenance of technical documentation such as system overviews, interface descriptions, configuration guides, test procedures, and troubleshooting notes.

  • Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and operational stakeholders to clarify requirements and ensure solutions align with safety, performance, and usability expectations.

  • Assist with early deployments, pilots, demonstrations, or transition-to-support activities as systems move from development into sustained operation.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts in monitoring, diagnostics, and support processes to make systems easier to operate and maintain.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 2-5 years of experience in systems integration, test engineering, automation, controls, robotics, industrial systems, software deployment, or a related technical area.

  • Foundational understanding of how software, hardware, controls, and operational processes interact in a larger system. Understanding of software deployment concepts.

  • Familiarity with system integration concepts such as interfaces, system states, alarms/faults, message flows, and configuration-driven behavior.

  • Basic troubleshooting skills with the ability to work methodically, gather evidence, and communicate findings clearly.

  • Familiarity with networking fundamentals such as IP addressing, connectivity checks, and common communication issues.

  • Ability to create clear technical documentation and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly to and work on-site at the company's testing facility in White, GA (50%) in support of integration, testing, and deployment activities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the airports / baggage handling domain.
