How much do automation engineering technology jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 19, 2026, the average yearly pay for automation engineering technology in Wisconsin is $108,128.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $87,300.00 and $124,700.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges automation engineering technologists face when integrating new systems into existing manufacturing processes?

One common challenge automation engineering technologists encounter is ensuring compatibility between new automation systems and legacy equipment, which often requires creative problem-solving and thorough testing. They also need to minimize downtime during installation and troubleshooting, as production schedules are usually tight. Additionally, clear communication and collaboration with operators, maintenance staff, and other engineers are essential to address concerns and ensure smooth adoption of new technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automation engineering technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automation Engineering Technologist, you need a solid background in electronics, control systems, and mechanical processes, often supported by a relevant associate’s or bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA systems, robotics, and certification such as ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP) are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help you excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure efficient automation processes, minimized downtime, and successful project implementation in industrial environments.

What is the difference between Automation Engineering Technology vs Electrical Engineering?

AspectAutomation Engineering TechnologyElectrical Engineering
CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Automation, Robotics, or Engineering TechnologyBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering

Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, automation companies, industrial sectorsUtilities, electronics, aerospace, research
Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

Automation Engineering Technology focuses on designing, maintaining, and troubleshooting automated systems in industrial settings, often requiring hands-on skills and technical certifications. Electrical Engineering covers a broader scope of electrical systems, circuit design, and power systems, often involving more theoretical knowledge and higher-level engineering principles. Both roles are vital in industry but differ in scope, education, and work environment.

Are automation engineering technologists in high demand?

Automation engineering technologists are in high demand due to the increasing adoption of automation and control systems across industries such as manufacturing, energy, and technology. Their skills in programming, troubleshooting, and working with tools like PLCs and SCADA systems make them valuable in modern industrial environments.

Do automation engineering technologists make good money?

Automation engineering technologists typically earn competitive salaries that vary by industry and experience level, with median wages often above the national average for technical roles. They can increase earning potential through certifications, specialized skills in PLCs and robotics, and experience in manufacturing or process automation environments.
