Job description

Job Title: Controls Engineer IIIPosition Summary

The Controls Engineer III provides technical support for manufacturing operations with a focus on process automation and control systems. This role serves as the subject matter expert (SME) for instrumentation and automation systems, ensuring they are designed, maintained, and optimized to support production objectives, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning and execution of plant projects involving complex equipment modifications and significant process improvements.
  • Serve as the Controls Lead for technology transfer (Tech Transfer) projects.
  • Provide technical support to resolve equipment breakdowns, automation issues, and quality-related events within manufacturing suites.
  • Act as the Controls and Automation Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Manufacturing and cross-functional teams, supporting the design, implementation, and operation of process automation systems.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing equipment and automation systems through technical analysis, including:
    • PI data analysis
    • PLC/HMI code review and troubleshooting
    • Control system diagnostics and performance optimization
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours technical support for critical manufacturing systems.
  • Ensure all work is performed safely and in compliance with company policies, GMP requirements, and training expectations.
  • Represent the Controls Engineering function in Integrated Product Teams (IPT), Joint Project Teams (JPT), and other cross-functional meetings.
  • Participate in internal and external audits and inspections as the Controls SME when required.
  • Own, investigate, and execute Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPAs) related to automation and control systems.
  • Initiate, manage, and support Change Controls through all phases of the change management process.
  • Review and approve Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Functional Specifications (FS), work instructions, and other technical documentation.
  • Maintain current knowledge of automation technologies, industry standards, and assigned training requirements.
Education

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Automation, or related discipline) or Computer Science.
Experience
  • 5–10 years of experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or equivalent industrial automation environments.
  • Experience supporting GMP manufacturing operations and process automation systems.
  • Previous project leadership or supervisory experience is preferred.
Required Skills
  • Strong knowledge of industrial automation and process control systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting PLC, HMI, SCADA, and process automation equipment.
  • Ability to analyze manufacturing data using PI Historian or similar data historian systems.
  • Knowledge of GMP regulations, change control processes, CAPA, and quality systems.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to think critically, make sound technical decisions, and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
