Required Skills3D modeling, parametric design, engineering principles2D drafting, annotation, detailing
Work EnvironmentEngineering firms, manufacturing, product designArchitectural, civil, and engineering firms
CertificationsAutodesk Certified Professional in InventorAutodesk Certified Professional in AutoCAD

Autocad Inventor specializes in 3D mechanical design and product modeling, while Autocad Drafter focuses on 2D technical drawings. Both roles require Autodesk certifications and are used in engineering and design industries, but they serve different purposes in the design process.

What is an AutoCAD Inventor?

An AutoCAD Inventor typically refers to a professional who uses Autodesk Inventor, a 3D CAD software, to design, visualize, and simulate mechanical products. Their main responsibilities include creating detailed 3D models, technical drawings, and assemblies for manufacturing and engineering projects. They collaborate with engineers and other team members to ensure designs are functional, manufacturable, and meet project specifications. This role requires strong technical skills in CAD software and a deep understanding of engineering principles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AutoCAD Inventor?

To thrive as an AutoCAD Inventor Designer, you need a strong background in mechanical design, engineering principles, and proficiency in 3D modeling, often supported by a degree or certification in engineering or drafting. Mastery of Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and familiarity with CAD standards are typically required, along with experience in related software like SolidWorks or Fusion 360. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help professionals excel when collaborating with engineers, clients, and manufacturing teams. These competencies are essential for producing accurate, manufacturable designs and ensuring project success from concept to production.

What can an AutoCAD Inventor do?

An AutoCAD Inventor designs and creates detailed 3D models and 2D drawings for mechanical parts and assemblies using Autodesk Inventor software. They develop prototypes, prepare manufacturing documentation, and collaborate with engineers and manufacturers to ensure accurate and functional designs. Proficiency in CAD tools and understanding of engineering principles are essential for this role.

How does an AutoCAD Inventor typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

AutoCAD Inventor professionals often work closely with engineers, product designers, and manufacturing teams to ensure 3D models and technical drawings meet project specifications. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to review design updates, address feedback, and coordinate changes. Effective communication is key, as Inventor specialists may need to explain design intent, incorporate suggestions from other stakeholders, and resolve any technical issues that arise during the development process. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and helps ensure project timelines are met.

Is AutoCAD still in demand?

AutoCAD remains a highly in-demand skill for CAD drafters, engineers, and architects, as it is widely used in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and engineering design. Professionals with proficiency in AutoCAD and related tools like Inventor are sought after for designing, drafting, and technical documentation roles, especially when combined with certifications and experience in 3D modeling and BIM workflows.

Job description

Thermal Engineering International (USA) Inc. is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Sr. Design Engineer to join our dynamic team. In this essential position, you will be tasked with assessing customer specifications, conducting mechanical design calculations and related analyses (including numerical analysis/FEA), preparing, verifying, and/or reviewing manufacturing drawings, as well as documenting, presenting, and updating of these activities to others as required. Your expertise will be crucial in the development of standards to facilitate the thermal and mechanical design and drafting of various types of heat exchangers for the ASME Section III Program. At TEI we value creativity, collaboration, and commitment to excellence, making this an exciting opportunity for a seasoned engineer looking to advance their career and make a significant impact in a rapidly evolving industry.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct mechanical and structural calculations (including FEA), prepare design details, fabrication drawings, and bills of materials. Analyze foundation loading and perform code calculations.
  • Create performance curves, operating manuals, and heat exchanger analysis per HEI, ASME, TEMA, and PED standards. Use software tools and coordinate with specialty engineers as required.
  • Review fabrication drawings for conformity to client specification and applicable codes and standards.
  • Support technical comments and follow-up with customers during proposals and project execution.
  • Facilitate discussions on quality assurance and construction materials with external customers and internal departments, including engineering, estimating, supply management, and global sourcing.
  • Inform the Project Manager of contract changes affecting price, scope, cost, quality, or delivery schedule.
  • Develop in-house design automation programs for mechanical design and drafting of Heat Exchangers, linking output like bills of materials to an estimating program for sales support.
  • Perform onsite equipment inspections and create reports documenting findings.
  • Development and publish comprehensive engineering and design standards for all Section III product offerings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Nuclear or Chemical Engineering is required.
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Nuclear or Chemical Engineering is a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering of ASME Section III and/or VIII Pressure Vessels and/or Heat Exchangers in power or Process/Oil & Gas market applications is required.
  • Direct related work experience in designing various types of pressure vessels and heat exchangers in accordance with ASME Section VIII-1 & 2, ASME Section III, or HEI Standards is required.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with team members.
  • Active Professional Engineering (PE) license in Mechanical or Structural Discipline is preferred.
  • Qualification requirements of a Certifying Engineer as defined within ASME Section III is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of ASME B31.1, AWS, and AISC is a plus.
