Job Summary:
As the Communications AutoCAD Drafter / OSP Design Technician (Planner I, II, III), you will ultimately be responsible for designing outside plant (OSP) fiber optic and coaxial network infrastructure, preparing engineering drawings, and supporting telecommunications network deployments. You will develop accurate construction drawings, coordinate permitting activities, and deliver high-quality design documentation that supports efficient project execution. As the Communications AutoCAD Drafter / OSP Design Technician, your customers are engineering teams, project managers, field personnel, clients, and permitting agencies, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through technical accuracy, quality designs, and timely project delivery.
Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):
  • Perform applied research, development, and provisioning of new and existing OSP and ISP facilities while evaluating cost-effective design alternatives
  • Evaluate existing fiber facilities using inventory tools, maps, schematics, GIS data, and engineering documentation
  • Research aerial, underground, customer-owned, and third-party conduit and support structure options
  • Recommend optimal routing solutions that balance customer requirements, constructability, and cost efficiency
  • Develop high-quality 2D OSP fiber network designs using AutoCAD and GIS software, including conduit routes, manholes, splice enclosures, and pole attachments
  • Design underground and aerial fiber routes based on engineering standards and field survey information
  • Prepare, submit, and track permit applications, including right-of-way, encroachment, and traffic control permits
  • Update engineering drawings using field notes, redlines, and construction documentation to create final as-built records
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and field personnel to ensure design quality and compliance with NESC, NEC, and local requirements
  • Perform quality assurance reviews of engineering drawings prior to release
  • Develop preliminary Bills of Material (BOM) supporting routing and construction decisions
  • Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs

Required Qualifications:
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) preferred

Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional AutoCAD drafting experience (Civil 3D preferred)
  • Experience with OSP, Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH), or Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial (HFC) network design
  • Experience interpreting GIS data, engineering drawings, field notes, and survey information
  • Experience with OSP infrastructure design and permitting processes
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and GIS software
  • Knowledge of FTTx deployment preferred

Planner I
Experience
  • No telecommunications experience required; STEM college major preferred.
  • Entry-level experience with AutoCAD or related 2D design software.

Skills and Abilities
  • Strong motivation to learn how to research, develop, and provision new and existing OSP and ISP facilities.
  • Basic understanding of accounting concepts to evaluate cost alternatives.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and PDF editing software.
  • Basic proficiency with AutoCAD or similar CAD software.
