Auto Mechanic Entry information

Is 25 too late to become an auto mechanic?

Auto mechanic entry is open to individuals of any age, including 25, as the profession values skills, training, and certifications over age. Many mechanics start their careers later in life after completing technical training or apprenticeships, making age less of a barrier to entering the field.

Auto Mechanic Entry and Auto Service Technician roles often overlap, with both requiring similar certifications and working in comparable environments. The main difference lies in job focus: entry-level mechanics may handle basic repairs, while service technicians often perform more complex diagnostics and maintenance tasks. Both roles serve as foundational positions in automotive repair industries.

How to start an auto mechanic career?

To start an auto mechanic career, obtain a high school diploma or equivalent, then complete a formal training program or apprenticeship to learn vehicle repair skills. Earning certifications such as the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification can improve job prospects. Gaining hands-on experience and developing knowledge of tools and diagnostic equipment are essential steps in entering the field.

What does an entry-level auto mechanic do?

An entry-level auto mechanic performs basic vehicle repairs and maintenance, such as oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and replacing parts under supervision. They use tools like wrenches and diagnostic equipment and often work in repair shops or service centers while gaining experience and certifications. This role provides foundational skills for more advanced automotive work.

How to get into auto mechanic entry with no experience?

To start as an entry-level auto mechanic with no experience, focus on gaining basic automotive knowledge through online courses or community college classes, and consider obtaining a relevant certification such as the ASE Entry-Level Certification. Volunteering or seeking apprenticeships at repair shops can provide hands-on experience and help build skills needed for entry-level positions.

Job description

$25.00/hour
Factors which may affect starting pay may include geography/market, skills, education, experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
Immediately hiring! Are you ready to take the next step in your automotive repair career working on moving vans and box trucks customers rely on? If you're detail-oriented, mechanically skilled, and enjoy hands-on work that keeps vehicles on the road, join the Avis Budget Group team supporting Budget Truck operations.
In this role, your work helps ensure trucks are safe, reliable, and available-directly supporting customer businesses and a smooth rental experience.
What You'll Do:
As an Automotive Mechanic (B Tech), you will perform essential mechanical repairs and maintenance on a diverse fleet of newer moving vans and box trucks across multiple brands with minimal technical supervision. Your responsibilities include oil and fluid services, lubrication, tire repairs, brake and suspension work, and warranty-related repairs based on your experience level.
You may also assist senior technicians with more complex diagnostics and repair procedures as you continue to grow your skills. As needed, you may be required to drive a Budget Truck on public roads for testing, repair verification, or operational support.
By keeping vehicles operating safely and efficiently, your work helps reduce downtime, supports fleet availability, and ensures customers can get on the road with confidence.
Perks You'll Get:
• Bi-weekly hourly wage (New York and Puerto Rico: weekly wage)
• On-the-job training to expand your automotive skills and support ASE certification growth
• Paid time off
• Medical, dental and other insurance
• Flexible spending account opportunity to contribute up to $270 as a tax-free benefit for public transportation or parking expenses
• Retirement benefits (401k)
• Employee discounts, including discounted car rental and discounted prices on the purchase of Avis/Budget cars
* Above perks may vary based on full-time/part-time status and location
What We're Looking For:
• Valid Driver's License (Class A, B, or C)
• Minimum of 2 years of professional auto repair experience
• At least 1 ASE certification, with the ability to obtain 2 additional ASE certifications within the first year
• Working knowledge of ASE certification areas including, but not limited to: Engine Repair, Drivetrain/Axles, Suspension/Steering, Brakes, Electrical, Heating/Air Conditioning, Engine Performance, and Light Vehicle/Diesel
• Comfortable working in a mechanical shop with moderate to loud noise levels
• Must have a complete set of tools required for automotive repair and maintenance
• Basic computer skills, including typing and data entry
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, continuously stand, bend, reach, walk, sit and kneel frequently, enter, exit and drive vehicles
• Must be at least 21 years of age and legally authorized to work in the United States
• Must be able to obtain DOT medical clearance
• This position requires regular, on-site presence and cannot be performed remotely
• Previous Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) experience is preferred and considered a strong advantage
