Bechtel Mining and Metals offers engineering, procurement, and construction services for customers in the mining sector across multiple commodities including Iron Ore, Bauxite, Alumina, Aluminium, Copper, Gold, Coal, Lithium and Rare Earths markets.

Headquartered in Santiago, Chile, the M&M global business unit also has offices in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide in Australia along with execution units in the United States, Peru, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, India and other project locations around the world.

Bechtel are seeking personnel to join multiple existing and upcoming projects comprising copper/gold concentrators with associated ROM feed, ore handling, processing plant, tailings management facilities, and supporting infrastructure including water supply, power supply, maintenance facilities, offices, temporary and construction accommodation villages. 

In this role, you will assess and execute work scope and cost estimates for a project’s civil/structural aspects. You will lead design, development, modification, evaluation, and constructability reviews of civil/structural components and processes. Your technical expertise will ensure the unique and complex requirements of a project’s civil/structural aspects are met. 

You will be responsible for coordination of the production of technical drawings, calculations, specifications and material take-offs for a project’s design, procurement and constructability aspects. You will additionally be responsible for supporting and reviewing engineering developed by third party engineering service providers in contribution to the overall project scope.

This role will be responsible for the civil design of surface infrastructure inclusive of all internal and external access roads, process and non-process pads, construction laydowns, site drainage design, and storage ponds.

Your recommendations will resolve technical issues and ensure the unique and complex requirements of a project’s ROM to tailings mechanical requirements are met. 

This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership.

• Plans and conducts independent Civil work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of Civil engineering techniques, procedures and criteria on a medium size project or assignment in support of a global business unit for civil works on green field and brown field projects.
• Experience of using design software OpenRoads and CivilStorm
• Leads the design, development, modification, and evaluation of Civil components and processes utilizing relevant Bechtel Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) and Design Control Check List (DCCL) and Design Review Notices (DRNs)
• Reviews and approves key engineering drawings and calculations and bid summaries
• Reviews and approves key design documents, supplier drawings and data, material specifications, drawings, and change orders, for the project to which assigned
• Designs structures using advanced knowledge of civil engineering in the areas of hydrology, hydraulics, road design and pavement design, geotechnical and earthworks.
• Determines the appropriate use of various structural elements such as steel, wood, masonry, and concrete to ensure appropriate material is used based on load or stress requirements
• Originates and checks complex Civil engineering deliverables, such as overland flow, drainage, foundation and roadway calculations, specifications, and material requisitions
• Coordinates and interfaces as directed with the day-to-day technical work of personnel
• Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to upper management
• Develops conceptual designs for Civil engineering projects or projects having specialized or unique requirements
• Supports preparation of estimates, staffing needs and schedules
• Prepares or oversees the preparation of discipline estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule and budget, and supports implementation and assists with performance reporting
• Interprets new or special regulations, codes, standards, criteria, and performance data
• Coordinates with client representatives, as directed, to obtain their approval of Civil aspects of the work
• Conducts or leads special studies of new Civil engineering methods, materials and techniques
• Mentors Civil engineering personnel by providing on-the-job training for their
• professional development
• Provides input to and participates in special technical educational and training programs as directed
• Leads constructability reviews

• Requires a bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-13  years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience

• Demonstrated experience as a Civil Engineer, preferably within mining and metals industry
• Prior experience in the design of:
• bulk and detailed earthworks
• onsite roads
• site drainage and water management facilities
• Considered highly skilled and proficient in Civil Engineering discipline
• Seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of area of specialization, resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways
• Able to be registered as an RPEQ, or already registered as RPEQ is preferrable.
