What does an augmented reality developer intern do?

An Augmented Reality (AR) Developer Intern assists in designing, developing, and testing AR applications and features. They typically work with tools like Unity or Unreal Engine and use programming languages such as C# or JavaScript to create interactive experiences that blend digital content with the real world. Interns often support senior developers, contribute to user interface design, and help troubleshoot technical challenges. Their work may also involve researching new AR technologies and prototyping innovative solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an augmented reality developer intern?

To excel as an Augmented Reality Developer Intern, a strong background in computer science fundamentals, programming (especially in C#, C++, or JavaScript), and familiarity with AR frameworks is essential. Experience with AR development tools such as Unity, Unreal Engine, and platforms like ARKit or ARCore is highly valuable, and coursework or certifications in AR/VR technologies can be advantageous. Creativity, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this role. These qualifications and qualities enable interns to create innovative AR experiences and efficiently collaborate in fast-paced development environments.

What types of projects and technologies can I expect to work with as an augmented reality developer intern?

As an Augmented Reality Developer Intern, you'll typically work on projects involving mobile AR applications, interactive prototypes, and possibly headset-based experiences using platforms like ARKit, ARCore, or Unity. You'll collaborate closely with designers and senior developers to turn creative concepts into functional AR experiences, often participating in brainstorming sessions and code reviews. This role gives you hands-on experience with 3D modeling, real-time rendering, and user interaction design, providing a solid foundation for a future career in immersive technology.

What is the difference between Augmented Reality Developer Intern vs AR Software Engineer Intern?

AspectAugmented Reality Developer InternAR Software Engineer Intern

Job description

The Vision Products Group (VPG) is looking for an experience prototyper to help develop and define the next generation of spatial and intelligence based user experiences. This team is working to define future products that understand and reason about you and your world, bringing computing experiences to your day-to-day life, using augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), computer vision (CV), and ambient computing and Internet of Things (IoT). As a team member you will help us understand the experiences enabled by these technologies that have the potential to delight, inspire, and empower millions of people.
Description
As an experience prototyper, you will help us "learn by doing", working rapidly and cross-functionally to understand and express key capabilities of future products and technologies-including intelligence, augmented reality, and ambient computing-by creating interactive experience prototypes to guide decision-making and build experiential data and intuition across the organization and the company. You will use Apple technologies like Swift and ARKit, augmenting them when necessary and appropriate with whatever other tools are available to express the most vital aspects of an idea, and quickly build coherent, user-focused experiences to help feel and understand it more deeply. Your audiences will range from team members to technical partners and cross-functional collaborators to executives and decision-makers, depending on the problem at hand. Your work will be instrumental in helping Apple to understand the promises and pitfalls of technologies that may not even exist yet, and will help guide the incubation of those technologies towards product.
Minimum Qualifications
BS in Computer Science or equivalent degree and 5+ years relevant experience
Able to build end user applications using technologies like SwiftUI, ARKit, or similar
Familiar with rapid prototyping techniques (AI-assisted or "vibe" coding, "Wizard of Oz" techniques, Arduino/embedded systems, or similar)
Experienced in building applications involving AI and foundation models, including prompting and fine-tuning LLMs, using MCP-based systems, etc.
Able and excited to learn new tools and techniques quickly
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with prototyping technologies like Touch Designer, PureData, Arduino, etc.
Experience with IoT/Ubicomp/ambient interfaces, natural UI, etc.
Familiarity with immersive experiences, 3D math, Unity or other 3D development platforms
Comfortable in navigating hardware and software trade-offs
Comfortable exploring ambiguous and open-ended problems
