Audio Visual Crestron Programmer information

What is an audio visual Crestron programmer?

Audio Visual Crestron Programmers are specialized professionals who design, program, and configure control systems created by Crestron, a leading manufacturer of automation and control solutions for audio visual (AV) environments. They work with hardware and software to automate and manage AV equipment, lighting, climate, and other integrated systems in spaces like conference rooms, classrooms, and auditoriums. Their responsibilities include writing custom code, creating user interfaces, testing system functionality, and troubleshooting issues to ensure seamless user experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an audio visual Crestron programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Audio Visual Crestron Programmer, you need a deep understanding of AV systems integration, programming logic, and a background in electronics or computer science, often supported by a Crestron certification. Familiarity with Crestron Toolbox, SIMPL Windows, VT Pro-e, and related AV control platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with clients and technical teams. These abilities ensure the successful design, implementation, and troubleshooting of complex AV automation systems that meet client needs.

What is the difference between Audio Visual Crestron Programmer vs AV Technician?

AspectAudio Visual Crestron ProgrammerAV Technician
CredentialsTypically requires certifications in Crestron programming and AV systemsOften has technical certifications or on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesigning, programming, and integrating AV control systems in commercial or corporate settingsInstalling, troubleshooting, and maintaining AV equipment on-site
Industry UsageCommonly employed in integration firms, corporate AV departments, and system design companiesFound in event venues, installation companies, and service providers

The main difference is that an Audio Visual Crestron Programmer focuses on designing and programming AV control systems using Crestron technology, while an AV Technician handles installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of AV equipment. Both roles are essential in AV projects but differ in scope and responsibilities.

How does an audio visual Crestron programmer typically collaborate with project managers and AV technicians during an installation project?

An Audio Visual Crestron Programmer works closely with project managers to understand project requirements, timelines, and client expectations. They collaborate with AV technicians to ensure proper hardware setup and connectivity before programming begins. Throughout the installation, the programmer provides technical guidance, troubleshoots system issues, and tests integration across devices to deliver a seamless AV experience. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as programmers often coordinate on-site adjustments and participate in client handovers.

Job description

Who We Are:
PEAKE is a technology integrator focused on bridging the gap between people, technology, and operations. For more than 20 years. PEAKE's team of experts in mobile infrastructure, communication systems, and enterprise operations has guided customers through the complex communications technology landscape to design and integrate advanced, end-to-end solutions that meet the technology and operational infrastructure needs of any scope and complexity.
Clearance Requirement
  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Active DoD (TS/SCI) clearance required.

PEAKE is a proud recipient of the 2025 HIRE Vets Gold Medallion Award from the U.S. Department of Labor, the highest federal recognition for employers committed to veteran hiring, retention, and professional growth.
The Role
  • As an Audio Visual Programmer at PEAKE, you'll work alongside a team of AV Engineers and Program Managers to deliver complete audio-visual systems to our customers from design and programming through installation, commissioning, and turnover. Equally important is the communication side. You'll be the connective tissue between the technical work and everyone who needs to know how it's going, coordinating with AV Engineers and field technicians on-site, keeping Program Managers informed on progress and blockers, and communicating directly with customers and external stakeholders about project status, timelines, and technical decisions. On-site, you'll often serve as the technical lead and primary point of contact, representing PEAKE in customer-facing government environments.

  • Success in this role requires deep Crestron expertise, real installation experience, strong commissioning and troubleshooting instincts, and the kind of communication skills that keep projects moving and stakeholders aligned. This is a role for someone who is a programmer by trade but a competent installer by experience. Your primary craft is Crestron programming - developing and modifying control code (SIMPL, SIMPL+, and/or C#/VC-4), configuring system functionality, and ensuring everything integrates per engineering specifications. But you've come up through the field, you know your way around a rack, and you're comfortable picking up tools and working through an installation start to finish when the job calls for it.

Primary Responsibilities:
Crestron Programming (Primary Craft)
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for Crestron control system programming - design, develop, and modify control code in SIMPL, SIMPL+, and/or C#/VC-4
  • Configure and customize system functionality to meet engineering specifications and customer requirements
  • Develop, modify, and troubleshoot Extron control system code (Global Configurator, Global Scripter, or similar) as projects require
  • Build and maintain reusable code modules and standards that improve consistency across PEAKE projects

System Design & Documentation
  • Design, read, and interpret system schematics, cable riser diagrams, and architectural drawings
  • Translate engineering designs into working control systems and validate signal flow across AV, control, and network components
  • Contribute to design reviews and flag programming or integration risks early

Installation & On-Site Execution
  • Work alongside AV Engineers and field technicians to install AV systems from start to finish in customer environments
  • Oversee equipment rack buildouts and staging - wire lacing, grounding, power distribution, and hardware integration
  • Terminate and test audio, video, network, control, and power cabling
  • Mount and configure displays, video walls, microphones, speakers, and control interfaces as needed
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work environment on every job site

Commissioning & Troubleshooting
  • Lead system commissioning - testing, performance validation, and final turnover to the customer
  • Troubleshoot complex issues across control, AV, and network systems, both remotely and on-site
  • Validate that systems meet design and operational requirements before sign-off

Project Coordination & Communication
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for customers and stakeholders
  • Coordinate daily with AV Engineers and Program Managers to keep projects aligned with milestones
  • Communicate project status, technical decisions, blockers, and timelines clearly to internal teams and external stakeholders
  • Represent PEAKE professionally in customer-facing government and military environments
  • Guide and support the field engineers on installation best practices and issue resolution

Education/Certifications:
  • 6+ years of hands-on AV systems integration experience with a strong focus on Crestron programming (SIMPL, SIMPL+, and/or C# / VC-4)
  • Proven experience developing, modifying, and troubleshooting Crestron control systems in complex environments
  • Experience with Extron control systems (Global Configurator, Global Scripter, or similar)
  • Strong understanding of AV system architecture, signal flow, and system integration
  • Solid networking knowledge (TCP/IP, IP addressing) as it relates to AV systems
  • AVIXA CTS certification preferred (CTS-I or CTS-D a plus)
  • Manufacturer certifications (Crestron, Extron) are highly desired
  • Strong communication and customer-facing skills, with experience working in government or secure environments preferred

Compensation & Benefits:
  • Competitive pay based on experience and qualifications
  • Daily per diem allowance for work-related travel (aligned with GSA guidelines)

Physical & Travel Requirements:
  • Ability to travel approximately 40% to customer sites nationwide, including throughout the DMV region and occasional international travel to Europe, to support and lead complex AV system installations and commissioning efforts.
  • Willingness to work from PEAKE's Maryland headquarters as needed for team collaboration, project planning, staging, and customer support activities.

Equal Opportunity Employer:
PEAKE hires based solely on business needs and the qualifications of each individual. We do not tolerate discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or any other protected status. We are committed to compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local employment laws. Applicants must be able to pass a Background Check & Drug Screen.
