How much do audio algorithm development jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 11, 2026, the average yearly pay for audio algorithm development in the United States is $96,155.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $79,500.00 and $106,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is audio algorithm development?

Audio algorithm development involves designing and implementing mathematical methods to process, analyze, and transform sound signals. These algorithms are used in applications like speech recognition, music production, noise reduction, and audio effects. Professionals in this field work with programming languages and digital signal processing (DSP) techniques to create efficient and high-quality audio solutions for a variety of products and platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an audio algorithm developer?

To thrive as an Audio Algorithm Developer, you need strong skills in digital signal processing, programming (often in C++, Python, or MATLAB), and a solid foundation in mathematics, typically supported by a relevant degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Familiarity with audio processing libraries, DSP development environments, and version control systems is common, and some roles may require experience with machine learning frameworks. Creativity, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills for developing innovative solutions and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure the development of high-quality, efficient audio algorithms that meet user needs and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced when developing audio algorithms, and how can they be addressed in a collaborative team environment?

Developing audio algorithms often involves balancing technical performance with real-time processing constraints, ensuring compatibility across hardware platforms, and minimizing artifacts or unwanted noise. One frequent challenge is accurately modeling complex audio phenomena while maintaining computational efficiency. Collaborating closely with DSP engineers, software developers, and quality assurance teams can help address these challenges by enabling rapid prototyping, iterative testing, and knowledge sharing. Regular team meetings and code reviews are essential for aligning on project goals and resolving integration issues early in the development cycle.

What is the difference between Audio Algorithm Development vs Audio Signal Processing Engineer?

AspectAudio Algorithm DevelopmentAudio Signal Processing Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields; knowledge of DSP and programmingBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Signal Processing, or related fields; strong programming skills
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, audio software firmsAudio hardware companies, consumer electronics, broadcasting
Industry UsageDeveloping new algorithms for noise reduction, echo cancellation, speech recognitionImplementing and optimizing audio processing in products and devices

Audio Algorithm Development focuses on creating and designing new audio algorithms, while Audio Signal Processing Engineers implement, optimize, and deploy these algorithms in real-world applications. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and often work in overlapping environments, but their core responsibilities differ in development versus application.

Job description

SUMMER 2027

Shure offers a challenging, fun, and rewarding summer internship program. The twelve-week program is offered to undergraduate and graduate students. We offer internships with a variety of work arrangements from onsite interns to fully remote in US. Each intern will receive a competitive salary. Additionally, Interns who are asked to relocate to Illinois for onsite internships will receive a housing stipend to cover living expenses. Applications will be collected, reviewed, and selected candidates will be contacted in late fall/early winter.

Join Shureโ€™s DSP Software team as a Audio DSP Engineering Intern to develop the next generation of intelligent audio products tailored for the live performer, the content creator, and the A/V conference participant! Contribute to projects that may include modeling, collecting data & evaluating, developing, and optimizing digital audio processing and machine learning algorithms for various audio products. You will work closely with your mentor and teammates on projects that typically focus on advanced development projects in support of future DSP based audio features and processing for conferencing products like the MXA line.

This Internship is Onsite in Niles, IL.

  • Deliver digital signal processing and Machine Learning features into a variety of intelligent products to provide best-in-class audio experience to end user
  • Simulate algorithms using Python, Matlab, and other prototyping tools; perform objective audio testing and conduct subjective listening validation; collect and evaluate algorithm performance data.
  • Translate real time audio signal processing and machine learning algorithms from simulation model to floating- point DSPs, ARMs, or PC platforms in C/C++
  • Optimize, test, and debug algorithm operation on real-time target platform to meet product constraints (MIPS, memory) and requirements (latency, fidelity)
  • Document algorithm design and performance
  • Collaborate with members of larger cross-functional development team including acoustics, analog / digital / RF hardware, mechanical, systems, and product management
  • Work with technical mentor to estimate, organize, and plan work tasks
  • Present personal contributions to product stakeholders and executive management

  • Completed at least three years of coursework in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, data science, AI/ML or audio related major with an emphasis in Digital Signal Processing
  • Experience with Matlab or Python required
  • Experience with C, C++ or Assembly language programming
  • Experience designing any audio DSP software or hardware, preferably embedded implementations but can also include Matlab / Python simulations
