Athletic Training Intern information

What is an athletic training intern?

Athletic Training Interns are students or recent graduates who work under the supervision of certified athletic trainers to gain practical experience in injury prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation. They assist with the daily operations of athletic training facilities, help care for athletes, and learn about sports medicine procedures. This internship is often a requirement for completing an academic program in athletic training and helps prepare individuals for certification and future employment in the field.

What are the typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for an athletic training intern during a sports season?

As an Athletic Training Intern, you’ll assist certified athletic trainers with injury prevention, assessment, and rehabilitation for athletes. Your daily tasks may include preparing treatment areas, taping and bracing athletes, maintaining equipment, and documenting injury reports. Interns often gain hands-on experience during practices and games, which helps develop clinical and communication skills. You’ll also collaborate closely with coaches, athletes, and healthcare professionals, providing a valuable introduction to the multidisciplinary nature of sports medicine. This role is an excellent stepping stone for those seeking to become certified athletic trainers or pursue other sports health careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an athletic training intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Athletic Training Intern, you need foundational knowledge in injury prevention, assessment, and rehabilitation, typically supported by coursework in athletic training or a related degree program. Familiarity with taping techniques, first aid/CPR certification, and experience using injury documentation software are often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and attention to detail are essential soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure interns can effectively support athletes' health, learn from experienced professionals, and contribute to a safe training environment.
