Job description

Position Summary
Paine College seeks a licensed, dedicated Onsite Athletic Trainer to provide comprehensive sports medicine coverage for its NCCAA Division I student-athletes. The Athletic Trainer is responsible for injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation services across all sponsored sports, working in close partnership with the Director of Athletics, coaching staff, team physicians, and campus health services to safeguard student-athlete health and support their academic and athletic success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide direct on-field and clinical athletic training coverage for practices, competitions, and conditioning sessions across all intercollegiate sports.
  • Evaluate, treat, and manage athletic injuries, applying appropriate first aid, taping, bracing, and emergency care as needed.
  • Develop and implement injury prevention programs, including pre-participation physicals coordination, conditioning recommendations, and hydration/heat-illness protocols.
  • Design and oversee individualized rehabilitation programs in coordination with team physicians and outside medical providers.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential student-athlete medical records, injury reports, and treatment logs in compliance with HIPAA/FERPA and NCCAA requirements.
  • Establish and maintain emergency action plans (EAPs) for all athletic venues and lead emergency response during athletic events.
  • Manage the athletic training room, including inventory of medical supplies, taping/treatment equipment, and adherence to safety and sanitation standards.
  • Coordinate referrals to team physicians, physical therapists, and specialists; track return-to-play protocols, including concussion management.
  • Communicate regularly with coaches, the Director of Athletics, and families regarding student-athlete health status and return-to-play timelines.
  • Ensure department-wide compliance with NCCAA health and safety guidelines, drug/supplement education, and risk-management policies.
  • Assist with budgeting and ordering of athletic training and medical supplies.
  • Supervise athletic training student aides or interns, if applicable.
  • Represent Paine College Athletics professionally at home and away competitions, and support the College's mission and Christian, HBCU identity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or related field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Current certification by the Board of Certification (BOC) for the Athletic Trainer.
  • Eligible for or currently licensed as an Athletic Trainer in the State of Georgia.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
  • Minimum 1-3 years of athletic training experience in a collegiate, high school, or clinical sports medicine setting.
  • Working knowledge of NCCAA (or comparable intercollegiate athletics association) health, safety, and eligibility guidelines.
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with coaches, student-athletes, families, and medical staff.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel with athletic teams.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience at an HBCU or faith-based institution.
  • Experience managing athletic training services across multiple sports simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record / athletic training management software.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, and lift equipment or assist injured student-athletes (up to 50 lbs) as needed.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions during practices and competitions.
  • Frequent evening, weekend, and travel commitments aligned with the athletics competition calendar.
